Jesus Teaches at the Feast 1 CPDV Then, after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee. For he was not willing to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
CPDV Now the feast day of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near. BSB BSB: However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
CPDV And his brothers said to him: “Move away from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples there may also see your works that you do. BSB BSB: So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
CPDV Of course, no one does anything in secret, but he himself seeks to be in the public view. Since you do these things, manifest yourself to the world.” BSB BSB: For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
CPDV Therefore, Jesus said to them: “My time has not yet come; but your time is always at hand. BSB BSB: Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
CPDV The world cannot hate you. But it hates me, because I offer testimony about it, that its works are evil. BSB BSB: The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
CPDV You may go up to this feast day. But I am not going up to this feast day, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.” BSB BSB: Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
CPDV When he had said these things, he himself remained in Galilee. BSB BSB: Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
CPDV But after his brothers went up, then he also went up to the feast day, not openly, but as if in secret. BSB BSB: But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
CPDV Therefore, the Jews were seeking him on the feast day, and they were saying, “Where is he?” BSB BSB: So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
CPDV And there was much murmuring in the crowd concerning him. For certain ones were saying, “He is good.” But others were saying, “No, for he seduces the crowds.” BSB BSB: Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
CPDV Yet no one was speaking openly about him, out of fear of the Jews. BSB BSB: Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
CPDV Then, about the middle of the feast, Jesus ascended into the temple, and he was teaching. BSB BSB: About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
CPDV Jesus responded to them and said: “My doctrine is not of me, but of him who sent me. BSB BSB: “My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
CPDV If anyone has chosen to do his will, then he will realize, about the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I am speaking from myself. BSB BSB: If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
CPDV Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and injustice is not in him. BSB BSB: He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
CPDV Did not Moses give you the law? And yet not one among you keeps the law! BSB BSB: Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
CPDV Why are you seeking to kill me?” The crowd responded and said: “You must have a demon. Who is seeking to kill you?” BSB BSB: “You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
CPDV Jesus responded and said to them: “One work have I done, and you all wonder. BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
CPDV For Moses gave you circumcision, (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. BSB BSB: But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
CPDV If a man can receive circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you indignant toward me, because I have made a man whole on the Sabbath? BSB BSB: If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
CPDV Do not judge according to appearances, but instead judge a just judgment.” BSB BSB: Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Is Jesus the Christ? 25 CPDV Therefore, some of those from Jerusalem said: “Is he not the one whom they are seeking to kill? BSB BSB: Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
CPDV And behold, he is speaking openly, and they say nothing to him. Could the leaders have decided that it is true this one is the Christ? BSB BSB: Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
CPDV But we know him and where he is from. And when the Christ has arrived, no one will know where he is from.” BSB BSB: But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
CPDV Therefore, Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying: “You know me, and you also know where I am from. And I have not arrived of myself, but he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
CPDV I know him. For I am from him, and he has sent me.” BSB BSB: but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
CPDV Therefore, they were seeking to apprehend him, and yet no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. BSB BSB: So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
CPDV But many among the crowd believed in him, and they were saying, “When the Christ arrives, will he perform more signs than this man does?” BSB BSB: Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
CPDV The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him. And the leaders and the Pharisees sent attendants to apprehend him. BSB BSB: When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
CPDV Therefore, Jesus said to them: “For a brief time, I am still with you, and then I am going to him who sent me. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
CPDV You shall seek me, and you will not find me. And where I am, you are not able to go.” BSB BSB: You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
CPDV And so the Jews said among themselves: “Where is this place to which he will go, such that we will not find him? Will he go to those dispersed among the Gentiles and teach the Gentiles? BSB BSB: At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
CPDV What is this word that he spoke, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me; and where I am, you are not able to go?’ ” BSB BSB: What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
Living Water 37 CPDV Then, on the last great day of the feast, Jesus was standing and crying out, saying: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink: BSB BSB: On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
CPDV whoever believes in me, just as Scripture says, ‘From his chest shall flow rivers of living water.’ ” BSB BSB: Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”
CPDV Now he said this about the Spirit, which those who believe in him would soon be receiving. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. BSB BSB: He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Division over Jesus 40 CPDV Therefore, some from that crowd, when they had heard these words of his, were saying, “This one truly is the Prophet.” BSB BSB: On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
CPDV Others were saying, “He is the Christ.” Yet certain ones were saying: “Does the Christ come from Galilee? BSB BSB: Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
CPDV Does Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?” BSB BSB: Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
CPDV And so there arose a dissension among the multitude because of him. BSB BSB: So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
CPDV Now certain ones among them wanted to apprehend him, but no one laid hands upon him. BSB BSB: Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders 45 CPDV Therefore, the attendants went to the high priests and the Pharisees. And they said to them, “Why have you not brought him?” BSB BSB: Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
CPDV The attendants responded, “Never has a man spoken like this man.” BSB BSB: “Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
CPDV And so the Pharisees answered them: “Have you also been seduced? BSB BSB: “Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
CPDV Have any of the leaders believed in him, or any of the Pharisees? BSB BSB: “Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
CPDV But this crowd, which does not know the law, they are accursed.” BSB BSB: But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”
CPDV Nicodemus, the one who came to him by night and who was one of them, said to them, BSB BSB: Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
CPDV “Does our law judge a man, unless it has first heard him and has known what he has done?” BSB BSB: “Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
CPDV They responded and said to him: “Are you also a Galilean? Study the Scriptures, and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee.” BSB BSB: “Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
