The Woman Caught in Adultery 1 CPDV But Jesus continued on to the Mount of Olives. BSB BSB: But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
CPDV And early in the morning, he went again to the temple; and all the people came to him. And sitting down, he taught them. BSB BSB: Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
CPDV Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery, and they stood her in front of them. BSB BSB: The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
CPDV And they said to him: “Teacher, this woman was just now caught in adultery. BSB BSB: and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
CPDV And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore, what do you say?” BSB BSB: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
CPDV But they were saying this to test him, so that they might be able to accuse him. Then Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the earth. BSB BSB: They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
CPDV And then, when they persevered in questioning him, he stood upright and said to them, “Let whoever is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.” BSB BSB: When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
CPDV And bending down again, he wrote on the earth. BSB BSB: And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
CPDV But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, with the woman standing in front of him. BSB BSB: When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
CPDV Then Jesus, raising himself up, said to her: “Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?” BSB BSB: Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
CPDV And she said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said: “Neither will I condemn you. Go, and now do not choose to sin anymore.” BSB BSB: “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
Jesus the Light of the World (1 John 1:5–10)
CPDV Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
CPDV And so the Pharisees said to him, “You offer testimony about yourself; your testimony is not true.” BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
CPDV Jesus responded and said to them: “Even though I offer testimony about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
CPDV You judge according to the flesh. I do not judge anyone. BSB BSB: You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
CPDV And when I do judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone, but it is I and he who sent me: the Father. BSB BSB: But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
CPDV And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. BSB BSB: Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
CPDV I am one who offers testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me offers testimony about me.” BSB BSB: I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
CPDV Therefore, they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered: “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.” BSB BSB: “Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
CPDV Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, while teaching in the temple. And no one apprehended him, because his hour had not yet come. BSB BSB: He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
CPDV Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them: “I am going, and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you are not able to go.” BSB BSB: Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
CPDV And so the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself, for he said: ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go?’ ” BSB BSB: So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
CPDV And he said to them: “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. BSB BSB: Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
CPDV Therefore, I said to you, that you will die in your sins. For if you will not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.” BSB BSB: That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
CPDV And so they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them: “The Beginning, who is also speaking to you. BSB BSB: “Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
CPDV I have much to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true. And what I have heard from him, this I speak within the world.” BSB BSB: “I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”
CPDV And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father. BSB BSB: They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
CPDV And so Jesus said to them: “When you will have lifted up the Son of man, then you shall realize that I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but just as the Father has taught me, so do I speak. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.
CPDV And he who sent me is with me, and he has not abandoned me alone. For I always do what is pleasing to him.” BSB BSB: He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
The Truth Will Set You Free (2 John 1:4–6)
CPDV As he was speaking these things, many believed in him. BSB BSB: As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
CPDV Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: “If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples. BSB BSB: So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
CPDV And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” BSB BSB: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
CPDV They answered him: “We are the offspring of Abraham, and we have never been a slave to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be set free?’ ” BSB BSB: “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
CPDV Jesus answered them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
CPDV Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity. Yet the Son does abide in eternity. BSB BSB: A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.
CPDV Therefore, if the Son has set you free, then you will truly be free. BSB BSB: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
CPDV I know that you are sons of Abraham. But you are seeking to kill me, because my word has not taken hold in you. BSB BSB: I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
CPDV I speak what I have seen with my Father. And you do what you have seen with your father.” BSB BSB: I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
CPDV They responded and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them: “If you are the sons of Abraham, then do the works of Abraham. BSB BSB: “Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.
CPDV But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. BSB BSB: But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
CPDV You do the works of your father.” Therefore, they said to him: “We were not born out of fornication. We have one father: God.” BSB BSB: You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”
CPDV Then Jesus said to them: “If God were your father, certainly you would love me. For I proceeded and came from God. For I did not come from myself, but he sent me. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
CPDV Why do you not recognize my speech? It is because you are not able to hear my word. BSB BSB: Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
CPDV You are of your father, the devil. And you will carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning. And he did not stand in the truth, because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks it from his own self. For he is a liar, and the father of lies. BSB BSB: You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 CPDV But if I speak the truth, you do not believe me. BSB BSB: But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!
CPDV Which of you can convict me of sin? If I speak the truth to you, why do you not believe me? BSB BSB: Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
CPDV Whoever is of God, hears the words of God. For this reason, you do not hear them: because you are not of God.” BSB BSB: Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Before Abraham Was Born, I Am 48 CPDV Therefore, the Jews responded and said to him, “Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?” BSB BSB: The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”
CPDV Jesus responded: “I do not have a demon. But I honor my Father, and you have dishonored me. BSB BSB: “I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
CPDV But I am not seeking my own glory. There is One who seeks and judges. BSB BSB: I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.
CPDV Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone will have kept my word, he will not see death for eternity.” BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
CPDV Therefore, the Jews said: “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets; and yet you say, ‘If anyone will have kept my word, he shall not taste death for eternity.’ BSB BSB: “Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.
CPDV Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. So who do you make yourself to be?” BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”
CPDV Jesus responded: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me. And you say about him that he is your God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
CPDV And yet you have not known him. But I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, then I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word. BSB BSB: You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
CPDV And so the Jews said to him, “You have not yet reached fifty years, and you have seen Abraham?” BSB BSB: Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
CPDV Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.” BSB BSB: “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 CPDV Therefore, they took up stones to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and he departed from the temple. BSB BSB: At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
