Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy 1 CPDV And it happened that, when Jesus entered the house of a certain leader of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were observing him. BSB BSB: One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
CPDV And behold, a certain man before him was afflicted with edema. BSB BSB: Right there before Him was a man with dropsy.
CPDV And responding, Jesus spoke to the experts in the law and to the Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath?” BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
CPDV But they kept silent. Yet truly, taking hold of him, he healed him and sent him away. BSB BSB: But they remained silent. Then Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.
CPDV And responding to them, he said, “Which of you will have a donkey or an ox fall into a pit, and will not promptly pull him out, on the day of the Sabbath?” BSB BSB: And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”
CPDV And they were unable to respond to him about these things. BSB BSB: And they were unable to answer these questions.
The Parable of the Guests 7 CPDV Then he also told a parable, to those who were invited, noticing how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: BSB BSB: When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, He told them a parable:
CPDV “When you are invited to a wedding, do not sit down in the first place, lest perhaps someone more honored than yourself may have been invited by him. BSB BSB: “When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited.
CPDV And then he who called both you and him, approaching, may say to you, ‘Give this place to him.’ And then you would begin, with shame, to take the last place. BSB BSB: Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place.
CPDV But when you are invited, go, sit down in the lowest place, so that, when he who invited you arrives, he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the sight of those who sit at table together with you. BSB BSB: But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you.
CPDV For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” BSB BSB: For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
CPDV Then he also said to the one who had invited him: “When you prepare a lunch or dinner, do not choose to call your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your wealthy neighbors, lest perhaps they might then invite you in return and repayment would made to you. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
CPDV But when you prepare a feast, call the poor, the disabled, the lame, and the blind. BSB BSB: But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind,
CPDV And you will be blessed because they do not have a way to repay you. So then, your recompense will be in the resurrection of the just.” BSB BSB: and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
The Parable of the Banquet (Matthew 22:1–14)
CPDV When someone sitting at table with him had heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.” BSB BSB: When one of those reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
CPDV So he said to him: “A certain man prepared a great feast, and he invited many. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests.
CPDV And he sent his servant, at the hour of the feast, to tell the invited to come; for now everything was ready. BSB BSB: When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
CPDV And at once they all began to make excuses. The first said to him: ‘I bought a farm, and I need to go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’ BSB BSB: But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please excuse me.’
CPDV And another said: ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I ask you to excuse me.’ BSB BSB: Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please excuse me.’
CPDV And another said, ‘I have taken a wife, and therefore I am not able to go.’ BSB BSB: Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come.’
CPDV And returning, the servant reported these things to his lord. Then the father of the family, becoming angry, said to his servant: ‘Go out quickly into the streets and neighborhoods of the city. And lead here the poor, and the disabled, and the blind, and the lame.’ BSB BSB: The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’
CPDV And the servant said: ‘It has been done, just as you ordered, lord, and there is still room.’ BSB BSB: ‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
CPDV And the lord said to the servant: ‘Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel them to enter, so that my house may be filled. BSB BSB: So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
CPDV For I tell you, that none of those men who were invited will taste of my feast.’ ” BSB BSB: For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will taste my banquet.’”
The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66)
CPDV “If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yes, even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple. BSB BSB: “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple. 27 CPDV And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me, is not able to be my disciple. BSB BSB: And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
CPDV For who among you, wanting to build a tower, would not first sit down and determine the costs that are required, to see if he has the means to complete it? BSB BSB: Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
CPDV Otherwise, after he will have laid the foundation and not been able to finish it, everyone who sees it may begin to mock him, BSB BSB: Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
CPDV saying: ‘This man began to build what he was not able to finish.’ BSB BSB: saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’
CPDV Or, what king, advancing to engage in war against another king, would not first sit down and consider whether he may be able, with ten thousand, to meet one who comes against him with twenty thousand? BSB BSB: Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
CPDV If not, then while the other is still far away, sending a delegation, he would ask him for terms of peace. BSB BSB: And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.
CPDV Therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he possesses is not able to be my disciple. BSB BSB: In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.
Good Salt (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:49–50)
CPDV Salt is good. But if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be seasoned? BSB BSB: Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?
CPDV It is useful neither in soil, nor in manure, so instead, it shall be thrown away. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” BSB BSB: It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
