Women Minister to Jesus 3 CPDV and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many other women, who were ministering to him from their resources. BSB BSB: Joanna the wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.
The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1–23; Mark 4:1–20)
CPDV Then, when a very numerous crowd was gathering together and hurrying from the cities to him, he spoke using a comparison: BSB BSB: While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, He told them this parable:
CPDV “The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell beside the way; and it was trampled and the birds of the air devoured it. BSB BSB: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.
CPDV And some fell upon rock; and having sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. BSB BSB: Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.
CPDV And some fell among thorns; and the thorns, rising up with it, suffocated it. BSB BSB: Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings.
CPDV And some fell upon good soil; and having sprung up, it produced fruit one hundredfold.” As he said these things, he cried out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” BSB BSB: Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up and produced a crop—a hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
CPDV Then his disciples questioned him as to what this parable might mean. BSB BSB: Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
CPDV And he said to them: “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. But to the rest, it is in parables, so that: seeing, they may not perceive, and hearing, they may not understand. BSB BSB: He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’
CPDV Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. BSB BSB: Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
CPDV And those beside the way are those who hear it, but then the devil comes and takes the word from their heart, lest by believing it they may be saved. BSB BSB: The seeds along the path are those who hear, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
CPDV Now those upon rock are those who, when they hear it, accept the word with joy, but these have no roots. So they believe for a time, but in a time of testing, they fall away. BSB BSB: The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in the time of testing, they fall away.
CPDV And those which fell among thorns are those who have heard it, but as they go along, they are suffocated by the concerns and riches and pleasures of this life, and so they do not yield fruit. BSB BSB: The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature.
CPDV But those which were on good soil are those who, upon hearing the word with a good and noble heart, retain it, and they bring forth fruit in patience. BSB BSB: But the seeds on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, cling to it, and by persevering produce a crop.
The Lesson of the Lamp (Mark 4:21–25)
CPDV Now no one, lighting a candle, covers it with a container, or sets it under a bed. Instead, he places it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. BSB BSB: No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
CPDV For there is nothing secret, which will not be made clear, nor is there anything hidden, which will not be known and be brought into plain sight. BSB BSB: For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
CPDV Therefore, take care how you listen. For whoever has, it will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” BSB BSB: Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers (Matthew 12:46–50; Mark 3:31–35)
CPDV Then his mother and brothers came to him; but they were not able to go to him because of the crowd. BSB BSB: Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.
CPDV And it was reported to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” BSB BSB: He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
CPDV And in response, he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” BSB BSB: But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”
Jesus Calms the Storm (Psalm 107:1–43; Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41)
CPDV Now it happened, on a certain day, that he climbed into a little boat with his disciples. And he said to them, “Let us make a crossing over the lake.” And they embarked. BSB BSB: One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So He got into a boat with them and set out.
CPDV And as they were sailing, he slept. And a windstorm descended over the lake. And they were taking on water and were in danger. BSB BSB: As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
CPDV Then, drawing near, they awakened him, saying, “Teacher, we are perishing.” But as he rose up, he rebuked the wind and the raging water, and they ceased. And a tranquility occurred. BSB BSB: The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and all was calm.
CPDV Then he said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they, being afraid, were amazed, saying to one another, “Who do you think this is, so that he commands both wind and sea, and they obey him?” BSB BSB: “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20)
CPDV And they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. BSB BSB: Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.
CPDV And when he had gone out to the land, a certain man met him, who had now had a demon for a long time. And he did not wear clothes, nor did he stay in a house, but among the sepulchers. BSB BSB: When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
CPDV And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him. And crying out in a loud voice, he said: “What is there between me and you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you not to torture me.” BSB BSB: When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!”
CPDV For he was ordering the unclean spirit to depart from the man. For on many occasions, it would seize him, and he was bound with chains and held by fetters. But breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into deserted places. BSB BSB: For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the demon into solitary places.
CPDV Then Jesus questioned him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered into him. BSB BSB: “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.
CPDV And they petitioned him not to order them to go into the abyss. BSB BSB: And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss.
CPDV And in that place, there was a herd of many swine, pasturing on the mountain. And they petitioned him to permit them to enter into them. And he permitted them. BSB BSB: There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. So the demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.
CPDV Therefore, the demons departed from the man, and they entered into the swine. And the herd rushed violently down a precipice into the lake, and they were drowned. BSB BSB: Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
CPDV And when those who were pasturing them had seen this, they fled and reported it in the city and the villages. BSB BSB: When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside.
CPDV Then they went out to see what was happening, and they came to Jesus. And they found the man, from whom the demons had departed, sitting at his feet, clothed as well as in a sane mind, and they were afraid. BSB BSB: So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
CPDV Then those who had seen this also reported to them how he had been healed from the legion. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
CPDV And the entire multitude from the region of the Gerasenes pleaded with him to depart from them. For they were seized by a great fear. Then, climbing into the boat, he went back again. BSB BSB: Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.
CPDV And the man from whom the demons had departed pleaded with him, so that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, BSB BSB: The man whom the demons had left begged to go with Jesus. But He sent him away, saying,
CPDV “Return to your house and explain to them what great things God has done for you.” And he traveled through the entire city, preaching about the great things that Jesus had done for him. BSB BSB: “Return home and describe how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and proclaimed all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.
The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43)
CPDV Now it happened that, when Jesus had returned, the crowd received him. For they were all waiting for him. BSB BSB: When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
CPDV And behold, a man came, whose name was Jairus, and he was a leader of the synagogue. And he fell down at the feet of Jesus, asking him to enter into his house. BSB BSB: Just then a synagogue leader named Jairus came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Him to come to his house,
CPDV For he had an only daughter, nearly twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened that, as he was going there, he was hemmed in by the crowd. BSB BSB: because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,
CPDV And there was a certain woman, with a flow of blood for twelve years, who had paid out all her substance on physicians, and she was unable to be cured by any of them. BSB BSB: including a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one was able to heal her.
CPDV She approached him from behind, and she touched the hem of his garment. And at once the flow of her blood stopped. BSB BSB: She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
CPDV And Jesus said, “Who is it that touched me?” But as everyone was denying it, Peter, and those who were with him, said: “Teacher, the crowd hems you in and presses upon you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” BSB BSB: “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it. “Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”
CPDV And Jesus said: “Someone has touched me. For I know that power has gone out from me.” BSB BSB: But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”
CPDV Then the woman, upon seeing that she was not hidden, came forward, trembling, and she fell down before his feet. And she declared before all the people the reason that she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. BSB BSB: Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.
CPDV But he said to her: “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” BSB BSB: “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
CPDV While he was still speaking, someone came to the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble him.” BSB BSB: While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”
CPDV Then Jesus, upon hearing this word, replied to the father of the girl: “Do not be afraid. Only believe, and she will be saved.” BSB BSB: But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
CPDV And when he had arrived at the house, he would not permit anyone to enter with him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the girl. BSB BSB: When He entered the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.
CPDV Now all were weeping and mourning for her. But he said: “Do not weep. The girl is not dead, but only sleeping.” BSB BSB: Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her. But Jesus said, “Stop weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”
CPDV And they derided him, knowing that she had died. BSB BSB: And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.
CPDV But he, taking her by the hand, cried out, saying, “Little girl, arise.” BSB BSB: But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
CPDV And her spirit returned, and she immediately rose up. And he ordered them to give her something to eat. BSB BSB: Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.
CPDV And her parents were stupefied. And he instructed them not to tell anyone what had happened. BSB BSB: Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
