The Parable of the Ten Virgins 1 CPDV “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be like ten virgins, who, taking their lamps, went out to meet the groom and the bride. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
CPDV But five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
CPDV For the five foolish, having brought their lamps, did not take oil with them. BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
CPDV Yet truly, the prudent ones brought the oil, in their containers, with the lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
CPDV Since the bridegroom was delayed, they all fell asleep, and they were sleeping. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
CPDV But in the middle of the night, a cry went out: ‘Behold, the groom is arriving. Go out to meet him.’ BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
CPDV Then all those virgins rose up and trimmed their lamps. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
CPDV But the foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give to us from your oil, for our lamps are being extinguished.’ BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
CPDV The prudent responded by saying, ‘Lest perhaps there may not be enough for us and for you, it would be better for you to go to the vendors and buy some for yourselves.’ BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
CPDV But while they were going to buy it, the groom arrived. And those who were prepared entered with him to the wedding, and the door was closed. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
CPDV Yet truly, at the very end, the remaining virgins also arrived, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
CPDV But he responded by saying, ‘Amen I say to you, I do not know you.’ BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
CPDV And so you must be vigilant, because you do not know the day or the hour. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11–27)
CPDV For it is like a man setting out on a long journey, who called his servants and delivered to them his goods. BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
CPDV And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, yet to another he gave one, to each according to his own ability. And promptly, he set out. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
CPDV Then he who had received five talents went out, and he made use of these, and he gained another five. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
CPDV And similarly, he who had received two gained another two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
CPDV But he who had received one, going out, dug into the earth, and he hid the money of his lord. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
CPDV Yet truly, after a long time, the lord of those servants returned and he settled accounts with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
CPDV And when he who had received five talents approached, he brought another five talents, saying: ‘Lord, you delivered five talents to me. Behold, I have increased it by another five.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
CPDV His lord said to him: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful over a few things, I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the gladness of your lord.’ BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
CPDV Then he who had received two talents also approached, and he said: ‘Lord, you delivered two talents to me. Behold, I have gained another two.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
CPDV Then he who had received one talent, approaching, said: ‘Lord, I know that you are a hard man. You reap where you have not sown, and gather where you have not scattered. BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
CPDV And so, being afraid, I went out and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’ BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
CPDV But his lord said to him in response: ‘You evil and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered. BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
CPDV Therefore, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and then, at my arrival, at least I would have received what is mine with interest. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
CPDV And so, take the talent away from him and give it to the one who has ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
CPDV For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he shall have in abundance. But from him who has not, even what he seems to have, shall be taken away. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
CPDV And cast that useless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats 32 CPDV And all the nations shall be gathered together before him. And he shall separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
CPDV And he shall station the sheep, indeed, on his right, but the goats on his left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
CPDV Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
CPDV For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
CPDV naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
CPDV Then the just will answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when have we seen you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
CPDV And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
CPDV Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?’ BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
CPDV And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’ BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
CPDV For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
CPDV I was a stranger and you did not take me in; naked, and you did not cover me; sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.’ BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
CPDV Then they will also answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
CPDV Then he shall respond to them by saying: ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did not do it to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.’ BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
