Moab Seduces Israel (1 Corinthians 10:1–13)
1 CPDV Now Israel, at that time, dwelt in Shittim, and the people were fornicating with the daughters of Moab, BSB BSB: While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,
2 CPDV who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate, and they adored their gods. BSB BSB: who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.
3 CPDV And Israel was initiated into Baal of Peor. And so the Lord, being angry, BSB BSB: So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.
4 CPDV said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people, and hang them on gallows against the sun, so that my fury may be averted from Israel.” BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
5 CPDV And Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Let each one kill his neighbors, who have been initiated into Baal of Peor.” BSB BSB: So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
The Zeal of Phinehas 6 CPDV And behold, one of the sons of Israel entered, in the sight of his brothers, to a prostitute of Midian, within view of Moses and of all the crowd of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle. BSB BSB: Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
7 CPDV And when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, had seen it, he rose up from the midst of the multitude, and, seizing a dagger, BSB BSB: On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,
8 CPDV he entered after the Israelite man, into the brothel, and he pierced both of them at the same time, specifically, the man and the woman at the location of their genitals. And the scourge ceased from among the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: followed the Israelite into the tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,
9 CPDV And there were slain twenty-four thousand men. BSB BSB: but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
10 CPDV And the Lord said to Moses: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
11 CPDV “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted my wrath from the sons of Israel. For he was moved against them by my zeal, so that I myself, in my zeal, might not wipe away the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.
12 CPDV Because of this, say to him: Behold, I give to him the peace of my covenant. BSB BSB: Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace.
13 CPDV And the covenant of the everlasting priesthood shall be as much for him as for his offspring. For he was zealous on behalf of his God, and he has made expiation for the wickedness of the sons of Israel.” BSB BSB: It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14 CPDV Now the name of the Israelite man, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader from the kinship and tribe of Simeon. BSB BSB: The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.
15 CPDV Moreover, the Midianite woman, who was put to death together with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Zur, a most noble leader among the Midianites. BSB BSB: And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
16 CPDV And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses,
17 CPDV “Let the Midianites perceive you as enemies, and strike them down, BSB BSB: “Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
18 CPDV for they, too, have behaved with hostility against you, and they have deceived you insidiously by means of the idol Peor, and by Cozbi, the daughter of a commander of Midian, their sister, who was struck down in the day of the scourge because of the sacrilege of Peor.” BSB BSB: For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
