The Second Census of Israel (Numbers 1:1–4)
1 CPDV After the blood of the guilty was shed, the Lord said to Moses, and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest: BSB BSB: After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2 CPDV “Number the entire sum of the sons of Israel, from twenty years and above, by their houses and kinships, all who are able to go forth to war.” BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
3 CPDV And so, Moses and Eleazar the priest, who were in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, opposite Jericho, spoke to those who were BSB BSB: So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
4 CPDV from twenty years and above, just as the Lord had commanded. And this is their number: BSB BSB: “Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
The Tribe of Reuben 5 CPDV Ruben, the firstborn of Israel; his son, Hanoch, from whom is the family of the Hanochites; and Pallu, from whom is the family of the Palluites; BSB BSB: Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
6 CPDV and Hezron, from whom is the family of the Hezronites; and Carmi, from whom is the family of the Carmites. BSB BSB: the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
7 CPDV These are the families of the stock of Ruben, whose number was found to be forty-three thousand and seven hundred thirty. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8 CPDV The son of Phallu: Eliab; BSB BSB: Now the son of Pallu was Eliab,
9 CPDV his sons, Nemuel and Dathan and Abiram. These are Dathan and Abiram, the leaders of the people, who rose up against Moses and Aaron in the sedition at Korah, when they rebelled against the Lord. BSB BSB: and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
10 CPDV And the earth, opening its mouth, devoured Korah, with many others dying, when the fire burned two hundred fifty men. And a great miracle was wrought, BSB BSB: And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a warning sign.
11 CPDV so that, when Korah perished, his sons did not perish. BSB BSB: However, the line of Korah did not die out.
The Tribe of Simeon 12 CPDV The sons of Simeon, by their kinships: Nemuel, from him is the family of the Nemuelites; Jamin, from him is the family of the Jaminites; Jachin, from him is the family of the Jachinites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Simeon by their clans: The Nemuelite clan from Nemuel, the Jaminite clan from Jamin, the Jachinite clan from Jachin,
13 CPDV Sohar, from him is the family of the Soharites; Shaul, from him is the family of the Shaulites. BSB BSB: the Zerahite clan from Zerah, and the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
14 CPDV These are the families of the stock of Simeon, whose entire number was twenty-two thousand two hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.
The Tribe of Gad 15 CPDV The sons of Gad, by their kinships: Zephon, from him is the family of the Zephonites; Haggi, from him is the family of the Haggites; Shuni, from him is the family of the Shunites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gad by their clans: The Zephonite clan from Zephon, the Haggite clan from Haggi, the Shunite clan from Shuni,
16 CPDV Ozni, from him is the family of the Oznites; Eri, from him is the family of the Erites; BSB BSB: the Oznite clan from Ozni, the Erite clan from Eri,
17 CPDV Arod, from him is the family of the Arodites; Areli, from him is the family of the Arelites. BSB BSB: the Arodite clan from Arod, and the Arelite clan from Areli.
18 CPDV These are the families of Gad, whose entire number was forty thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
The Tribe of Judah 19 CPDV The sons of Judah: Er and Onan, who both died in the land of Canaan. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
20 CPDV And these were the sons of Judah, by their kinships: Shelah, from whom is the family of the Shelahites; Perez, from whom is the family of the Perezites; Zerah, from whom is the family of the Zerahites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 CPDV Moreover, the sons of Phares were: Hezron, from whom is the family of the Hezronites; and Hamul, from whom is the family of the Hamulites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 CPDV These are the families of Judah, whose entire number was seventy-six thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
The Tribe of Issachar 23 CPDV The sons of Issachar, by their kinships: Tola from whom is the family of the Tolaites; Puvah, from whom is the family of the Puvahites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah,
24 CPDV Jashub, from whom is the family of the Jashubites; Shimron, from whom is the family of the Shimronites. BSB BSB: the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 CPDV These are the kinships of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
The Tribe of Zebulun 26 CPDV The sons of Zebulon by their kinships: Sered, from whom is the family of the Seredites; Elon, from whom is the family of the Elonites; Jahleel, from whom is the family of the Jahleelites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 CPDV These are the kinships of Zebulun, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
The Tribe of Manasseh 28 CPDV The sons of Joseph by their kinships: Manasseh and Ephraim. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 CPDV From Manasseh was born Machir, from whom is the family of the Machirites. Machir conceived Gilead, from whom is the family of the Gileadites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
30 CPDV Gilead had sons: Jezer, from whom is the family of the Jezerites; and Helek, from whom is the family of the Helekites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek,
31 CPDV and Asriel, from whom is the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, from whom is the family of the Shechemites; BSB BSB: the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
32 CPDV and Shemida, from whom is the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, from whom is the family of the Hepherites. BSB BSB: the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
33 CPDV Now Hepher was the father of Zelophehad, who had no sons, but only daughters, whose names are these: Mahlah, and Noa, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. BSB BSB: Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34 CPDV These are the families of Manasseh, and their number was fifty-two thousand seven hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
The Tribe of Ephraim 35 CPDV Now the sons of Ephraim by their kinships were these: Shuthelah, from whom is the family of the Shuthelahites; Becher, from whom is the family of the Becherites; Tahan, from whom is the family of the Tahanites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
36 CPDV Furthermore, the son of Shuthelah was Eran, from whom is the family of the Eranites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
37 CPDV These are the kinships of the sons of Ephraim, whose number was thirty-two thousand five hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
The Tribe of Benjamin 38 CPDV These are the sons of Joseph by their families: the sons of Benjamin in their kinships: Bela, from whom is the family of the Belaites; Ashbel, from whom is the family of the Ashbelites; Ahiram, from whom is the family of the Ahiramites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
39 CPDV Shupham, from whom is the family of the Shuphamites; Hupham, from whom is the family of the Huphamites. BSB BSB: the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40 CPDV The sons of Bela: Arad and Naaman. From Arad, the family of the Aradites; from Naaman, the family of the Naamanites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 CPDV These are the sons of Benjamin by their kinships, whose number was forty-five thousand six hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
The Tribe of Dan 42 CPDV The sons of Dan by their kinships: Shuham, from whom is the family of the Shuhamites. These are the kinships of Dan by their families. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
43 CPDV All these were Shuhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
The Tribe of Asher 44 CPDV The sons of Asher by their kinships: Imnah, from whom is the family of the Imnahites; Ishvi, from whom is the family of the Ishvites; Beriah, from whom is the family of the Beriahites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Asher by their clans: The Imnite clan from Imnah, the Ishvite clan from Ishvi, and the Beriite clan from Beriah.
45 CPDV The sons of Beriah: Heber, from whom is the family of the Heberites; and Malchiel, from whom is the family of the Malchielites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
46 CPDV Now the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. BSB BSB: And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47 CPDV These are the kinships of the sons of Asher, and their number was fifty-three thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
The Tribe of Naphtali 48 CPDV The sons of Naphtali by their kinships: Jahzeel, from whom is the family of the Jahzeelites; Guni, from whom is the family of the Gunites; BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
49 CPDV Jezer, from whom is the family of the Jezerites; Shillem, from whom is the family of the Shillemites. BSB BSB: the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
50 CPDV These are the kinships of the sons of Naphtali by their families, whose number was forty-five thousand four hundred. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
51 CPDV This is the sum of the sons of Israel, who were counted: six hundred thousand and one thousand seven hundred thirty. BSB BSB: These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
Inheritance by Lot 52 CPDV And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
53 CPDV “The land shall be divided to these, as their possessions, according to the number of their names. BSB BSB: “The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54 CPDV To the greater number you shall give a greater portion, and to the lesser number, a lesser portion. To each one, just as they have now been counted, a possession shall be delivered. BSB BSB: Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55 CPDV Yet only in so far as the land is divided by lot to a tribe and to families. BSB BSB: Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56 CPDV Whatever the lot will happen to be, it shall be accepted, either by the greater, or by the lesser. BSB BSB: Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
The Levites Numbered 57 CPDV Likewise, this is the number of the sons of Levi by their families: Gershon, from whom is the family of the Gershonites; Kohath, from whom is the family of the Kohathites; Merari, from whom is the family of the Merarites. BSB BSB: Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 CPDV These are the families of Levi: The family of Libni, the family of Hebroni, the family of Mahli, the family of Mushi, the family of Korah. Yet truly, Kohath conceived Amram, BSB BSB: These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
59 CPDV who had a wife, Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to him in Egypt. She bore, to her husband Amram: sons, Aaron and Moses, as well as their sister, Miriam. BSB BSB: and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60 CPDV From Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, and Eleazar and Ithamar. BSB BSB: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
61 CPDV Of these, Nadab and Abihu died, when they had offered strange fire before the Lord. BSB BSB: but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62 CPDV And these were all who were numbered: twenty-three thousand of the male gender, from one month and above. For they were not counted among the sons of Israel, neither was a possession given to them with the others. BSB BSB: The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Only Caleb and Joshua Remain 63 CPDV This is the number of the sons of Israel, who were enrolled by Moses and by Eleazar the priest, in the plains of Moab, above the Jordan, opposite Jericho. BSB BSB: These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
64 CPDV Among these, not one of them was numbered before, by Moses and Aaron in the desert of Sinai. BSB BSB: Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.
65 CPDV For the Lord had foretold that all would die in the wilderness. And not one of them remained, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. BSB BSB: For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
