The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21)
1 CPDV And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 CPDV “Instruct the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: When you will have entered into the land of Canaan, and it has fallen into your possession by lot, it shall be bound by these limits: BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3 CPDV The southern part shall begin from the wilderness of Sin, which is next to Edom, and it shall have the Sea of Salt as a limit to the east. BSB BSB: Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,
4 CPDV It shall circle on the south side along the ascent of the Scorpion, by this way crossing into Senna, and passing through, from the south, as far as Kadesh-barnea, from which its confines shall go out to the town called Adar, and extend even to Azmon. BSB BSB: cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5 CPDV And its limits shall go around from Azmon to the Torrent of Egypt, and shall end at the shore of the Great Sea. BSB BSB: where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.
6 CPDV Then the western region shall begin from the Great Sea, and the same shall be its end. BSB BSB: Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7 CPDV Furthermore, toward the northern region, its limits shall begin from the Great Sea, passing through even to the highest mountain. BSB BSB: Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8 CPDV From there, it limits shall advance into Hamath, as far as the limits of Zedad. BSB BSB: and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9 CPDV And its confines shall go all the way to Ziphron, and to the village of Enan. These shall be the limits on the northern side. BSB BSB: continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10 CPDV From there, its limits shall be measured, facing the east side, from the village of Enan as far as Shepham. BSB BSB: And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11 CPDV And from Shepham, the boundaries shall descend into Riblah, opposite the fountain of Daphnis. From there, the boundaries shall pass through, opposite the east, to the Sea of Chinnereth, BSB BSB: then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.
12 CPDV and shall extend as far as the Jordan, and, at the furthest extent, shall be enclosed by the Sea of Salt. You shall have this land, with its borders all around.” BSB BSB: Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13 CPDV And Moses instructed the sons of Israel, saying: “This shall be the land which you shall possess by lot, and which the Lord has ordered to be given to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe. BSB BSB: So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14 CPDV For the tribe of the sons of Ruben, by their families, and the tribe of the sons of Gad, according to the number of their kinships, and also one half of the tribe of Manasseh, BSB BSB: For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15 CPDV that is, two and a half tribes, have received their portion across the Jordan, opposite Jericho, toward the eastern side.” BSB BSB: These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Leaders to Divide the Land 16 CPDV And the Lord said to Moses: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 CPDV “These are the names of the men, who shall divide the land for you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, BSB BSB: “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18 CPDV and one leader from each tribe, BSB BSB: Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19 CPDV whose names are these: from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; BSB BSB: These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20 CPDV from the tribe of Simeon, Samuel the son of Ammihud; BSB BSB: Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21 CPDV from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon; BSB BSB: Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22 CPDV from the tribe of the sons of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli; BSB BSB: Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23 CPDV of the sons of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod; BSB BSB: Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24 CPDV from the tribe of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan; BSB BSB: Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25 CPDV from the tribe of Zebulon, Elizaphan the son of Parnach; BSB BSB: Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26 CPDV from the tribe of Issachar, Paltiel the leader, the son of Azzan; BSB BSB: Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27 CPDV from the tribe of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi; BSB BSB: Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28 CPDV from the tribe of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.” BSB BSB: and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29 CPDV These are the ones that the Lord has ordered to divide the land of Canaan to the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
