Redeem Us, O God (Romans 8:35–39)
CPDV Unto the end. To the sons of Korah, toward understanding. We have heard, O God, with our own ears. Our fathers have announced to us the work that you wrought in their days and in the days of antiquity. BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
CPDV Your hand dispersed the Gentiles, and you transplanted them. You afflicted a people, and you expelled them. BSB BSB: With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
CPDV For they did not take possession of the land by their sword, and their own arm did not save them. But your right hand and your arm, and the light of your countenance did so, because you were pleased with them. BSB BSB: For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
CPDV You yourself are my king and my God, who commands the salvation of Jacob. BSB BSB: You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
CPDV With you, we will brandish a horn before our enemies; and in your name, we will spurn those rising up against us. BSB BSB: Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
CPDV For I will not hope in my bow, and my sword will not save me. BSB BSB: For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
CPDV For you have saved us from those who afflict us, and you have bewildered those who hate us. BSB BSB: For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
CPDV In God, we will give praise all day long; and in your name, we will confess forever. BSB BSB: In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
CPDV But now, you have rejected and bewildered us, and you will not go forth with our armies, O God. BSB BSB: But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
CPDV You have turned our back to our enemies, and those who hated us have plundered for themselves. BSB BSB: You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
CPDV You have given us over like sheep for food. You have scattered us among the Gentiles. BSB BSB: You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
CPDV You have sold your people without a price, and no great number was exchanged for them. BSB BSB: You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
CPDV You have set us as a disgrace to our neighbors, a scoff and a derision to those who are around us. BSB BSB: You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
CPDV You have set us as a parable among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the peoples. BSB BSB: You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
CPDV All day long my shame is before me, and the confusion of my face has covered me, BSB BSB: All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
CPDV before the voice of the reproacher and the commentator, before the face of the adversary and the pursuer. BSB BSB: at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
CPDV All these things have come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, and we have not acted unjustly in your covenant. BSB BSB: All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
CPDV And our heart has not turned back. And you have not diverted our steps from your way. BSB BSB: Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
CPDV For you humbled us in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death has covered us. BSB BSB: But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
CPDV If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have extended our hands to a foreign god, BSB BSB: If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
CPDV will not God find this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart. For, because of you, we are being killed all day long. We are considered as sheep for the slaughter. BSB BSB: would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
CPDV Rise up. Why do you fall asleep, O Lord? Rise up, and do not reject us in the end. BSB BSB: Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
CPDV Why do you turn your face away, and why do you forget our needfulness and our tribulation? BSB BSB: Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
CPDV For our soul has been humbled into the dust. Our belly has been bound to the earth. BSB BSB: For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
CPDV Rise up, O Lord. Help us and redeem us, because of your name. BSB BSB: Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
