Dead to Sin, Alive to God (2 Corinthians 4:7–18)
CPDV So what shall we say? Should we remain in sin, so that grace may abound? BSB BSB: What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?
CPDV Let it not be so! For how can we who have died to sin still live in sin? BSB BSB: Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?
CPDV Do you not know that those of us who have been baptized in Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death? BSB BSB: Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
CPDV For through baptism we have been buried with him into death, so that, in the manner that Christ rose from the dead, by the glory of the Father, so may we also walk in the newness of life. BSB BSB: We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.
CPDV For if we have been planted together, in the likeness of his death, so shall we also be, in the likeness of his resurrection. BSB BSB: For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.
CPDV For we know this: that our former selves have been crucified together with him, so that the body which is of sin may be destroyed, and moreover, so that we may no longer serve sin. BSB BSB: We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
CPDV For he who has died has been justified from sin. BSB BSB: For anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
CPDV Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ. BSB BSB: Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.
CPDV For we know that Christ, in rising up from the dead, can no longer die: death no longer has dominion over him. BSB BSB: For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.
CPDV For in as much as he died for sin, he died once. But in as much as he lives, he lives for God. BSB BSB: The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.
CPDV And so, you should consider yourselves to be certainly dead to sin, and to be living for God in Christ Jesus our Lord. BSB BSB: So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
CPDV Therefore, let not sin reign in your mortal body, such that you would obey its desires. BSB BSB: Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.
CPDV Nor should you offer the parts of your body as instruments of iniquity for sin. Instead, offer yourselves to God, as if you were living after death, and offer the parts of your body as instruments of justice for God. BSB BSB: Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.
CPDV For sin should not have dominion over you. For you are not under the law, but under grace. BSB BSB: For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
The Wages of Sin 15 CPDV What is next? Should we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? Let it not be so! BSB BSB: What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not!
CPDV Do you not know to whom you are offering yourselves as servants under obedience? You are the servants of whomever you obey: whether of sin, unto death, or of obedience, unto justice. BSB BSB: Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?
CPDV But thanks be to God that, though you used to be the servants of sin, now you have been obedient from the heart to the very form of the doctrine into which you have been received. BSB BSB: But thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed.
CPDV And having been freed from sin, we have become servants of justice. BSB BSB: You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
CPDV I am speaking in human terms because of the infirmity of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of your body to serve impurity and iniquity, for the sake of iniquity, so also have you now yielded the parts of your body to serve justice, for the sake of sanctification. BSB BSB: I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.
CPDV For though you were once the servants of sin, you have become the children of justice. BSB BSB: For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness.
CPDV But what fruit did you hold at that time, in those things about which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. BSB BSB: What fruit did you reap at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The outcome of those things is death.
CPDV Yet truly, having been freed now from sin, and having been made servants of God, you hold your fruit in sanctification, and truly its end is eternal life. BSB BSB: But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.
CPDV For the wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. BSB BSB: For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
