Warnings from Israel’s Past (Numbers 16:41–50; Numbers 25:1–5)
DBY For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; BSB BSB: I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.
DBY and all were baptised unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; BSB BSB: They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
DBY and all ate the same spiritual food, BSB BSB: They all ate the same spiritual food
DBY and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed them : (now the rock was the Christ;) BSB BSB: and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
DBY yet God was not pleased with the most of them, for they were strewed in the desert. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
DBY But these things happened as types of us, that we should not be lusters after evil things, as they also lusted. BSB BSB: These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did.
DBY Neither be ye idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. BSB BSB: Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
DBY Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. BSB BSB: We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
DBY Neither let us tempt the Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished by serpents. BSB BSB: We should not test Christ, as some of them did, and were killed by snakes.
DBY Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer. BSB BSB: And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.
DBY Now all these things happened to them as types, and have been written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. BSB BSB: Now these things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.
DBY So that let him that thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. BSB BSB: So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.
DBY No temptation has taken you but such as is according to man's nature; and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able to bear , but will with the temptation make the issue also, so that ye should be able to bear it . BSB BSB: No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.
Flee from Idolatry (Exodus 20:22–26)
DBY Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. BSB BSB: Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
DBY I speak as to intelligent persons : do ye judge what I say. BSB BSB: I speak to reasonable people; judge for yourselves what I say.
DBY The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of the Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of the Christ? BSB BSB: Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
DBY Because we, being many, are one loaf, one body; for we all partake of that one loaf. BSB BSB: Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.
DBY See Israel according to flesh: are not they who eat the sacrifices in communion with the altar? BSB BSB: Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?
DBY What then do I say? that what is sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? BSB BSB: Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
DBY But that what the nations sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God. Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons. BSB BSB: No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
DBY Ye cannot drink the Lord's cup, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the Lord's table, and of the table of demons. BSB BSB: You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.
DBY Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? BSB BSB: Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

DBY But if any one say to you, This is offered to holy purposes, do not eat, for his sake that pointed it out, and conscience sake; BSB BSB: But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—
DBY but conscience, I mean, not thine own, but that of the other: for why is my liberty judged by another conscience? BSB BSB: the other one’s conscience, I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
