Roles in Worship 1 DBY Be my imitators, even as I also am of Christ. BSB BSB: You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
DBY Now I praise you, that in all things ye are mindful of me; and that as I have directed you, ye keep the directions. BSB BSB: Now I commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you.
DBY But I wish you to know that the Christ is the head of every man, but woman's head is the man, and the Christ's head God. BSB BSB: But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
DBY Every man praying or prophesying, having anything on his head, puts his head to shame. BSB BSB: Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
DBY For if a woman be not covered, let her hair also be cut off. But if it be shameful to a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaved, let her be covered. BSB BSB: If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
DBY For man indeed ought not to have his head covered, being God's image and glory; but woman is man's glory. BSB BSB: A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
DBY For man is not of woman, but woman of man. BSB BSB: For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.
DBY For also man was not created for the sake of the woman, but woman for the sake of the man. BSB BSB: Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
DBY Therefore ought the woman to have authority on her head, on account of the angels. BSB BSB: For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
DBY However, neither is woman without man, nor man without woman, in the Lord. BSB BSB: In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
DBY For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman, but all things of God. BSB BSB: For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
DBY Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman should pray to God uncovered? BSB BSB: Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
DBY Does not even nature itself teach you, that man, if he have long hair, it is a dishonour to him? BSB BSB: Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
DBY But woman, if she have long hair, it is glory to her; for the long hair is given to her in lieu of a veil. BSB BSB: but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
DBY But if any one think to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the assemblies of God. BSB BSB: If anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.
Sharing in the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:20–30; Mark 14:17–26; Luke 22:14–23)
DBY But in prescribing to you on this which I now enter on , I do not praise, namely, that ye come together, not for the better, but for the worse. BSB BSB: In the following instructions I have no praise to offer, because your gatherings do more harm than good.
DBY For first, when ye come together in assembly, I hear there exist divisions among you, and I partly give credit to it . BSB BSB: First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
DBY For there must also be sects among you, that the approved may become manifest among you. BSB BSB: And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.
DBY When ye come therefore together into one place, it is not to eat the Lord's supper. BSB BSB: Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat.
DBY For each one in eating takes his own supper before others , and one is hungry and another drinks to excess. BSB BSB: For as you eat, each of you goes ahead without sharing his meal. While one remains hungry, another gets drunk.
DBY Have ye not then houses for eating and drinking? or do ye despise the assembly of God, and put to shame them who have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this point I do not praise. BSB BSB: Don’t you have your own homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!
DBY For I received from the Lord, that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, in the night in which he was delivered up, took bread, BSB BSB: For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread,
DBY and having given thanks broke it , and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. BSB BSB: and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
DBY In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye shall drink it , in remembrance of me. BSB BSB: In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
DBY For as often as ye shall eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye announce the death of the Lord, until he come. BSB BSB: For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
DBY So that whosoever shall eat the bread, or drink the cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty in respect of the body and of the blood of the Lord. BSB BSB: Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
DBY But let a man prove himself, and thus eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. BSB BSB: Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
DBY For the eater and drinker eats and drinks judgment to himself, not distinguishing the body. BSB BSB: For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
DBY On this account many among you are weak and infirm, and a good many are fallen asleep. BSB BSB: That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
DBY But if we judged ourselves, so were we not judged. BSB BSB: Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment.
DBY But being judged, we are disciplined of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. BSB BSB: But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.
DBY So that, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait for one another. BSB BSB: So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
DBY If any one be hungry, let him eat at home, that ye may not come together for judgment. But the other things, whenever I come, I will set in order. BSB BSB: If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.
