A Greeting from Peter (2 Peter 1:1–2)
DBY Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, to the sojourners of the dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, BSB BSB: Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen
DBY elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by sanctification of the Spirit, unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. BSB BSB: according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
A Living Hope 3 DBY Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his great mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from among the dead, BSB BSB: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
DBY to an incorruptible and undefiled and unfading inheritance, reserved in the heavens for you, BSB BSB: and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,
DBY who are kept guarded by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. BSB BSB: who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
DBY Wherein ye exult, for a little while at present, if needed, put to grief by various trials, BSB BSB: In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials
DBY that the proving of your faith, much more precious than of gold which perishes, though it be proved by fire, be found to praise and glory and honour in the revelation of Jesus Christ: BSB BSB: so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
DBY whom, having not seen, ye love; on whom though not now looking, but believing, ye exult with joy unspeakable and filled with the glory, BSB BSB: Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
DBY receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls. BSB BSB: now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
DBY Concerning which salvation prophets, who have prophesied of the grace towards you, sought out and searched out; BSB BSB: Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully,
DBY searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ which was in them pointed out, testifying before of the sufferings which belonged to Christ, and the glories after these. BSB BSB: trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
DBY To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves but to you they ministered those things, which have now been announced to you by those who have declared to you the glad tidings by the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven, which angels desire to look into. BSB BSB: It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
A Call to Holiness (Hebrews 12:14–17)
DBY Wherefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope with perfect stedfastness in the grace which will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; BSB BSB: Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
DBY as children of obedience, not conformed to your former lusts in your ignorance; BSB BSB: As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance.
DBY but as he who has called you is holy, be ye also holy in all your conversation; BSB BSB: But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,
DBY because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy. BSB BSB: for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
DBY And if ye invoke as Father him who, without regard of persons, judges according to the work of each, pass your time of sojourn in fear, BSB BSB: Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners.
DBY knowing that ye have been redeemed, not by corruptible things, as silver or gold, from your vain conversation handed down from your fathers, BSB BSB: For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers,
DBY but by precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, the blood of Christ, BSB BSB: but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.
DBY who by him do believe on God, who has raised him from among the dead and given him glory, that your faith and hope should be in God. BSB BSB: Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.
The Enduring Word (Isaiah 40:6–8)
DBY Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth to unfeigned brotherly love, love one another out of a pure heart fervently; BSB BSB: Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.
DBY being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the living and abiding word of God. BSB BSB: For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
DBY but the word of the Lord abides for eternity. But this is the word which in the glad tidings is preached to you. BSB BSB: but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.
