The Living Stone and Chosen People (Isaiah 28:14–22; 1 Corinthians 3:10–15; Ephesians 2:19–22)
DBY Laying aside therefore all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envyings and all evil speakings, BSB BSB: Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander.
DBY as newborn babes desire earnestly the pure mental milk of the word, that by it ye may grow up to salvation, BSB BSB: Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
DBY if indeed ye have tasted that the Lord is good. BSB BSB: now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
DBY To whom coming, a living stone, cast away indeed as worthless by men, but with God chosen, precious, BSB BSB: As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight,
DBY yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
DBY Because it is contained in the scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believes on him shall not be put to shame. BSB BSB: For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”
DBY To you therefore who believe is the preciousness; but to the disobedient, the stone which the builders cast away as worthless, this is become head of the corner, BSB BSB: To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
DBY and a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; who stumble at the word, being disobedient to which also they have been appointed. BSB BSB: and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word—and to this they were appointed.
DBY But ye are a chosen race, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a possession, that ye might set forth the excellencies of him who has called you out of darkness to his wonderful light; BSB BSB: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
DBY Beloved, I exhort you , as strangers and sojourners, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; BSB BSB: Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul.
DBY having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that as to that in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may through your good works, themselves witnessing them , glorify God in the day of visitation. BSB BSB: Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.
Submission to Authorities (Romans 13:1–7)
DBY Be in subjection therefore to every human institution for the Lord's sake; whether to the king as supreme, BSB BSB: Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority,
DBY or to rulers as sent by him, for vengeance on evildoers, and praise to them that do well. BSB BSB: or to governors as those sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.
DBY Because so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye put to silence the ignorance of senseless men; BSB BSB: For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish men.
DBY as free, and not as having liberty as a cloak of malice, but as God's bondmen. BSB BSB: Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.
DBY Shew honour to all, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king. BSB BSB: Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
DBY Servants, be subject with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the ill-tempered. BSB BSB: Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but even to those who are unreasonable.
DBY For this is acceptable, if one, for conscience sake towards God, endure griefs, suffering unjustly. BSB BSB: For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God, this is to be commended.
DBY For what glory is it , if sinning and being buffeted ye shall bear it ? but if, doing good and suffering, ye shall bear it , this is acceptable with God. BSB BSB: How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
Christ’s Example of Suffering (Isaiah 53:1–8)
DBY For to this have ye been called; for Christ also has suffered for you, leaving you a model that ye should follow in his steps: BSB BSB: For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps:
DBY who, when reviled, reviled not again; when suffering, threatened not; but gave himself over into the hands of him who judges righteously; BSB BSB: When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.
DBY who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, in order that, being dead to sins, we may live to righteousness: by whose stripes ye have been healed. BSB BSB: He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.”
DBY For ye were going astray as sheep, but have now returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls. BSB BSB: For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
