Persecution Foretold (Acts 23:12–22)
DBY These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. BSB BSB: “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
DBY They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; BSB BSB: They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
DBY and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. BSB BSB: They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
DBY But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said them unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. BSB BSB: But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15–26)
DBY But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? BSB BSB: Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
DBY But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. BSB BSB: Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
DBY And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: BSB BSB: And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
DBY of sin, because they do not believe on me; BSB BSB: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
DBY of righteousness, because I go away to my Father, and ye behold me no longer; BSB BSB: in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
DBY of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. BSB BSB: and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
DBY I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. BSB BSB: I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it.
DBY He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce it to you. BSB BSB: He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
DBY All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce it to you. BSB BSB: Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
DBY A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, because I go away to the Father . BSB BSB: In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
Grief Will Turn to Joy 17 DBY Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father?BSB BSB: Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
DBY They said therefore, What is this which he says of the little while? We do not know of what he speaks. BSB BSB: They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”
DBY Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? BSB BSB: Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
DBY Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
DBY A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. BSB BSB: A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
DBY And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. BSB BSB: So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
Ask in My Name (Matthew 18:19–20)
DBY And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. BSB BSB: In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
DBY Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. BSB BSB: Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
DBY These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. BSB BSB: I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
DBY In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, BSB BSB: In that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
DBY for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. BSB BSB: For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.
DBY I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. BSB BSB: I came from the Father and entered the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father.”
DBY His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. BSB BSB: His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
DBY Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. BSB BSB: Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God.”
DBY Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? BSB BSB: “Do you finally believe?” Jesus replied.
DBY Behold, the hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. BSB BSB: “Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
DBY These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world. BSB BSB: I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
