John’s Inquiry (Luke 7:18–23)
DBY And it came to pass when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities. BSB BSB: After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
DBY and said to him, Art thou the coming one ? or are we to wait for another? BSB BSB: to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
DBY And Jesus answering said to them, Go, report to John what ye hear and see. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
DBY Blind men see and lame walk; lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear; and dead are raised, and poor have glad tidings preached to them: BSB BSB: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
DBY and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me. BSB BSB: Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Luke 7:24–35)
DBY But as they went away , Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed moved about by the wind? BSB BSB: As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
DBY But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate raiment? behold, those who wear delicate things are in the houses of kings. BSB BSB: Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.
DBY But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet: BSB BSB: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
DBY this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. BSB BSB: This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
DBY Verily I say to you, that there is not arisen among the born of women a greater than John the baptist. But he who is a little one in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
DBY But from the days of John the baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence, and the violent seize on it. BSB BSB: From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.
DBY For all the prophets and the law have prophesied unto John. BSB BSB: For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
DBY He that has ears to hear, let him hear. BSB BSB: He who has ears, let him hear.
DBY But to whom shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, which, calling to their companions, BSB BSB: To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
DBY say, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced: we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed. BSB BSB: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
DBY For John has come neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon. BSB BSB: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
DBY The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man that is eating and wine-drinking, a friend of tax-gatherers, and of sinners: — and wisdom has been justified by her children. BSB BSB: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”
Woe to the Unrepentant (Luke 10:13–16)
DBY Then began he to reproach the cities in which most of his works of power had taken place, because they had not repented. BSB BSB: Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
DBY Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee Bethsaida! for if the works of power which have taken place in you, had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they had long ago repented in sackcloth and ashes. BSB BSB: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
DBY But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in judgment-day than for you. BSB BSB: But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
DBY And thou, Capernaum, who hast been raised up to heaven, shalt be brought down even to hades. For if the works of power which have taken place in thee, had taken place in Sodom, it had remained until this day. BSB BSB: And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
DBY But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in judgment-day than for thee. BSB BSB: But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Rest for the Weary (Luke 10:21–24)
DBY At that time, Jesus answering said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes. BSB BSB: At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
DBY Yea, Father, for thus has it been well-pleasing in thy sight. BSB BSB: Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
DBY All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son but the Father, nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son may be pleased to reveal him . BSB BSB: All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
DBY Come to me, all ye who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest. BSB BSB: Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
DBY Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls; BSB BSB: Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
DBY for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. BSB BSB: For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
