A Remnant Chosen by Grace 2 DBY God has not cast away his people whom he foreknew. Know ye not what the scripture says in the history of Elias, how he pleads with God against Israel? BSB BSB: God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
DBY Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have dug down thine altars; and I have been left alone, and they seek my life. BSB BSB: “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well”?
DBY But what says the divine answer to him? I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed knee to Baal. BSB BSB: And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
DBY Thus, then, in the present time also there has been a remnant according to election of grace. BSB BSB: In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
DBY But if by grace, no longer of works: since otherwise grace is no more grace. BSB BSB: And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.
DBY What is it then? What Israel seeks for, that he has not obtained; but the election has obtained, and the rest have been blinded, BSB BSB: What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
DBY according as it is written, God has given to them a spirit of slumber, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear, unto this day. BSB BSB: as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
DBY And David says, Let their table be for a snare, and for a gin, and for a fall-trap, and for a recompense to them: BSB BSB: And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
DBY let their eyes be darkened not to see, and bow down their back alway. BSB BSB: May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”
The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11 DBY I say then, Have they stumbled in order that they might fall? Far be the thought: but by their fall there is salvation to the nations to provoke them to jealousy. BSB BSB: I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.
DBY But if their fall be the world's wealth, and their loss the wealth of the nations, how much rather their fulness? BSB BSB: But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
DBY For I speak to you, the nations, inasmuch as I am apostle of nations, I glorify my ministry; BSB BSB: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
DBY if by any means I shall provoke to jealousy them which are my flesh, and shall save some from among them. BSB BSB: in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.
DBY For if their casting away be the world's reconciliation, what their reception but life from among the dead? BSB BSB: For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
DBY Now if the first-fruit be holy, the lump also; and if the root be holy, the branches also. BSB BSB: If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
DBY Now if some of the branches have been broken out, and thou, being a wild olive tree, hast been grafted in amongst them, and hast become a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree, BSB BSB: Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root,
DBY boast not against the branches; but if thou boast, it is not thou bearest the root, but the root thee. BSB BSB: do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
DBY Thou wilt say then, The branches have been broken out in order that I might be grafted in. BSB BSB: You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”
DBY Right: they have been broken out through unbelief, and thou standest through faith. Be not high-minded, but fear: BSB BSB: That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
DBY if God indeed has not spared the natural branches; lest it might be he spare not thee either. BSB BSB: For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not spare you either.
DBY Behold then the goodness and severity of God: upon them who have fallen, severity; upon thee goodness of God, if thou shalt abide in goodness, since otherwise thou also wilt be cut away. BSB BSB: Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
DBY And they too, if they abide not in unbelief, shall be grafted in; for God is able again to graft them in. BSB BSB: And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
DBY For if thou hast been cut out of the olive tree wild by nature, and, contrary to nature, hast been grafted into the good olive tree, how much rather shall they, who are according to nature be grafted into their own olive tree? BSB BSB: For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved 26 DBY and so all Israel shall be saved. According as it is written, The deliverer shall come out of Zion; he shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. BSB BSB: And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
DBY And this is the covenant from me to them, when I shall have taken away their sins. BSB BSB: And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
DBY For the gifts and the calling of God are not subject to repentance. BSB BSB: For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
DBY For as indeed ye also once have not believed in God, but now have been objects of mercy through the unbelief of these; BSB BSB: Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
DBY so these also have now not believed in your mercy, in order that they also may be objects of mercy. BSB BSB: so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.
DBY For God hath shut up together all in unbelief, in order that he might shew mercy to all. BSB BSB: For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
A Hymn of Praise (Isaiah 40:9–31)
DBY For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counsellor? BSB BSB: “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?”
DBY or who has first given to him, and it shall be rendered to him? BSB BSB: “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
DBY For of him, and through him, and for him are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen. BSB BSB: For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
