The Serpent’s Deception (Romans 5:12–21)
2 DRA And the woman answered him, saying: Of the fruit of the trees that are in paradise we do eat: BSB BSB: The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3 DRA But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die. BSB BSB: but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
4 DRA And the serpent said to the woman: No, you shall not die the death. BSB BSB: “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.
5 DRA For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil. BSB BSB: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 DRA And the woman saw that the tree was good to eat, and fair to the eyes, and delightful to behold: and she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband who did eat. BSB BSB: When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
7 DRA And the eyes of them both were opened: and when they perceived themselves to be naked, they sewed together fig leaves, and made themselves aprons. BSB BSB: And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.
God Arraigns Adam and Eve 9 DRA And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him: Where art thou? BSB BSB: But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
10 DRA And he said: I heard thy voice in paradise; and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. BSB BSB: “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11 DRA And he said to him: And who hath told thee that thou wast naked, but that thou hast eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat? BSB BSB: “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 DRA And Adam said: The woman, whom thou gavest me to be my companion, gave me of the tree, and I did eat. BSB BSB: And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 DRA And the Lord God said to the woman: Why hast thou done this? And she answered: The serpent deceived me, and I did eat. BSB BSB: Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”
The Fate of the Serpent 14 DRA And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. BSB BSB: So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
15 DRA I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. BSB BSB: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
The Punishment of Mankind 16 DRA To the woman also he said: I will multiply thy sorrows, and thy conceptions: in sorrow shalt thou bring forth children, and thou shalt be under thy husband’s power, and he shall have dominion over thee. BSB BSB: To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
18 DRA Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herbs of the earth. BSB BSB: Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 DRA In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return to the earth, out of which thou wast taken: for dust thou art, and into dust thou shalt return. BSB BSB: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
20 DRA And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living. BSB BSB: And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.
The Expulsion from Paradise 21 DRA And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife, garments of skins, and clothed them. BSB BSB: And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
22 DRA And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. BSB BSB: Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
23 DRA And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken. BSB BSB: Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 DRA And he cast out Adam; and placed before the paradise of pleasure Cherubims, and a flaming sword, turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. BSB BSB: So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
