Jesus and the Samaritan Woman 1 DRA When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John, BSB BSB: When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
DRA (Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,) BSB BSB: (although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
DRA He left Judea, and went again into Galilee. BSB BSB: He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
DRA And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria. BSB BSB: Now He had to pass through Samaria.
DRA He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. BSB BSB: So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
DRA Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. It was about the sixth hour. BSB BSB: Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
DRA There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink. BSB BSB: When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
DRA For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats. BSB BSB: (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
DRA Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans. BSB BSB: “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
DRA Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
DRA The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water? BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
DRA Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
DRA Jesus answered, and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water, shall thirst again; but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst for ever: BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
DRA But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting. BSB BSB: But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
DRA The woman saith to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw. BSB BSB: The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
DRA Jesus saith to her: Go, call thy husband, and come hither. BSB BSB: Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
DRA The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband: BSB BSB: “I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
DRA For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly. BSB BSB: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
DRA The woman saith to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
DRA Jesus saith to her: Woman, believe me, that the hour cometh, when you shall neither on this mountain, not in Jerusalem, adore the Father. BSB BSB: “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
DRA But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true adorers shall adore the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeketh such to adore him. BSB BSB: But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
DRA God is a spirit; and they that adore him, must adore him in spirit and in truth. BSB BSB: God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
DRA The woman saith to him: I know that the Messias cometh (who is called Christ). Therefore, when he is come, he will tell us all things. BSB BSB: The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
DRA Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
The Disciples Return and Marvel 27 DRA And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her? BSB BSB: Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
DRA The woman therefore left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men there: BSB BSB: Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
DRA Come, and see a man who has told me all things whatsoever I have done. Is not he the Christ? BSB BSB: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
DRA They went therefore out of the city, and came unto him. BSB BSB: So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
DRA In the mean time the disciples prayed him, saying: Rabbi, eat. BSB BSB: Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
DRA But he said to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not. BSB BSB: But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
DRA The disciples therefore said one to another: Hath any man brought him to eat? BSB BSB: So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
DRA Jesus saith to them: My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, that I may perfect his work. BSB BSB: Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
DRA Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then the harvest cometh? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and see the countries; for they are white already to harvest. BSB BSB: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
DRA And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life everlasting: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice together. BSB BSB: Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
DRA For in this is the saying true: That it is one man that soweth, and it is another that reapeth. BSB BSB: For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
DRA I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labour: others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours. BSB BSB: I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe 39 DRA Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done. BSB BSB: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
DRA So when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired that he would tarry there. And he abode there two days. BSB BSB: So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
DRA And many more believed in him because of his own word. BSB BSB: And many more believed because of His message.
DRA And they said to the woman: We now believe, not for thy saying: for we ourselves have heard him, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. BSB BSB: They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
Jesus Heals the Official’s Son (Matthew 8:5–13; Luke 7:1–10)
DRA Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee. BSB BSB: After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
DRA For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. BSB BSB: Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
DRA And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day. BSB BSB: Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.
DRA He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum. BSB BSB: So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
DRA He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. BSB BSB: When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
DRA Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not. BSB BSB: Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
DRA The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
DRA Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way. BSB BSB: “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.
DRA And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived. BSB BSB: And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
DRA He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him. BSB BSB: So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
DRA The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house. BSB BSB: Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.
DRA This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee. BSB BSB: This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
