The Pool of Bethesda 1 DRA After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. BSB BSB: Some time later there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
DRA In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water. BSB BSB: On these walkways lay a great number of the sick, the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed.
DRA And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under. BSB BSB: Not in the BSB
DRA And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. BSB BSB: One man there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
DRA Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole? BSB BSB: When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
DRA The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am on my way, someone else goes in before me.”
DRA Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk. BSB BSB: Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”
DRA And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day. BSB BSB: Immediately the man was made well, and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now this happened on the Sabbath day,
DRA The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. BSB BSB: so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It is unlawful for you to carry your mat.”
DRA He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk. BSB BSB: But he answered, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
DRA They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? BSB BSB: “Who is this man who told you to pick it up and walk?” they asked.
DRA But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. BSB BSB: But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while the crowd was there.
DRA Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. BSB BSB: Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.”
DRA The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole. BSB BSB: And the man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Father and the Son 16 DRA Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. BSB BSB: Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews began to persecute Him.
DRA But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. BSB BSB: But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.”
DRA Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. BSB BSB: So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
DRA For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. BSB BSB: The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
DRA For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. BSB BSB: For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.
DRA For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son. BSB BSB: Furthermore, the Father judges no one, but has assigned all judgment to the Son,
DRA That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him. BSB BSB: so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
DRA Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
DRA Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
DRA For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself: BSB BSB: For as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.
DRA And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man. BSB BSB: And He has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
DRA And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. BSB BSB: and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
DRA I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me. BSB BSB: I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Testimonies about Jesus 31 DRA If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. BSB BSB: If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.
DRA There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. BSB BSB: There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that His testimony about Me is valid.
DRA You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth. BSB BSB: You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
DRA But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. BSB BSB: Even though I do not accept human testimony, I say these things so that you may be saved.
DRA He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. BSB BSB: John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you were willing for a season to bask in his light.
DRA But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me. BSB BSB: But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me.
DRA And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. BSB BSB: And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,
DRA And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not. BSB BSB: nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.
The Witness of Scripture (Luke 16:19–31)
DRA Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me. BSB BSB: You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me,
DRA And you will not come to me that you may have life. BSB BSB: yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
DRA I receive glory not from men. BSB BSB: I do not accept glory from men,
DRA But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you. BSB BSB: but I know you, that you do not have the love of God within you.
DRA I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. BSB BSB: I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not received Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him.
DRA How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? BSB BSB: How can you believe if you accept glory from one another, yet do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
DRA Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust. BSB BSB: Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, in whom you have put your hope.
DRA But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? BSB BSB: But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”
