The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; Luke 9:10–17)
DRA After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias).
DRA And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased. BSB BSB: A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.
DRA Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. BSB BSB: Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.
DRA Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand. BSB BSB: Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.
DRA When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? BSB BSB: When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”
DRA And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do. BSB BSB: But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
DRA Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. BSB BSB: Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”
DRA One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him: BSB BSB: One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
DRA There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many? BSB BSB: “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
DRA Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. BSB BSB: “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
DRA And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would. BSB BSB: Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.
DRA And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. BSB BSB: And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”
DRA They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. BSB BSB: So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
DRA Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.
Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 6:45–52)
DRA And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea. BSB BSB: When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
DRA And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum; and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come unto them. BSB BSB: got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.
DRA And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew. BSB BSB: A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
DRA When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, and they were afraid. BSB BSB: When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.
DRA But he saith to them: It is I; be not afraid. BSB BSB: But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
DRA They were willing therefore to take him into the ship; and presently the ship was at the land to which they were going. BSB BSB: Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
Jesus the Bread of Life 22 DRA The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there but one, and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone. BSB BSB: The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.
DRA But other ships came in from Tiberias; nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks. BSB BSB: However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
DRA When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping, and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus. BSB BSB: So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.
DRA And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither? BSB BSB: When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
DRA Jesus answered them, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
DRA Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed. BSB BSB: Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”
DRA They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? BSB BSB: Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”
DRA Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”
DRA They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew, that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work? BSB BSB: So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?
DRA Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. BSB BSB: Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
DRA Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
DRA For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world. BSB BSB: For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
DRA They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread. BSB BSB: “Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.”
DRA And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
DRA But I said unto you, that you also have seen me, and you believe not. BSB BSB: But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.
DRA Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day. BSB BSB: And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
DRA And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day. BSB BSB: For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
DRA The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven. BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
DRA And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he, I came down from heaven? BSB BSB: They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
DRA Jesus therefore answered, and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves. BSB BSB: “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus replied.
DRA No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up in the last day. BSB BSB: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
DRA It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me. BSB BSB: It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—
DRA Not that any man hath seen the Father; but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father. BSB BSB: not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.
DRA Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
DRA I am the bread of life. BSB BSB: I am the bread of life.
DRA Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead. BSB BSB: Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
DRA This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. BSB BSB: This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.
DRA I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world. BSB BSB: I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”
DRA The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? BSB BSB: At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
DRA Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. BSB BSB: So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.
DRA He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
DRA For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed. BSB BSB: For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.
DRA He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him. BSB BSB: Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
DRA As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me. BSB BSB: Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
DRA This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever. BSB BSB: This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
Many Disciples Turn Back (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33)
DRA Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard, and who can hear it? BSB BSB: On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”
DRA But Jesus, knowing in himself, that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you? BSB BSB: Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you?
DRA If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? BSB BSB: Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?
DRA It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you, are spirit and life. BSB BSB: The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
DRA But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe, and who he was, that would betray him. BSB BSB: However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)
DRA And he said: Therefore did I say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”
Peter’s Confession of Faith (Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; Luke 9:18–20)
DRA Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away? BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”
DRA And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. BSB BSB: Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
DRA And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God. BSB BSB: We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
DRA Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve; and one of you is a devil? BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
DRA Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve. BSB BSB: He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.
