The Woman Caught in Adultery 1 DRA And Jesus went unto mount Olivet. BSB BSB: But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
DRA And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them. BSB BSB: Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
DRA And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst, BSB BSB: The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
DRA And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery. BSB BSB: and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
DRA Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou? BSB BSB: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
DRA And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground. BSB BSB: They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
DRA When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. BSB BSB: When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
DRA And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground. BSB BSB: And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
DRA But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. BSB BSB: When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
DRA Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? BSB BSB: Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
DRA Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more. BSB BSB: “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
Jesus the Light of the World (1 John 1:5–10)
DRA Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life. BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
DRA The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true. BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
DRA Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
DRA You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man. BSB BSB: You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
DRA And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. BSB BSB: But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
DRA And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true. BSB BSB: Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
DRA I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me. BSB BSB: I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
DRA They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also. BSB BSB: “Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
DRA These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. BSB BSB: He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
DRA Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come. BSB BSB: Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
DRA The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come? BSB BSB: So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
DRA And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. BSB BSB: Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
DRA Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin. BSB BSB: That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
DRA They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you. BSB BSB: “Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
DRA Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world. BSB BSB: “I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”
DRA And they understood not, that he called God his Father. BSB BSB: They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
DRA Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak: BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.
DRA And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him. BSB BSB: He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
The Truth Will Set You Free (2 John 1:4–6)
DRA When he spoke these things, many believed in him. BSB BSB: As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
DRA Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. BSB BSB: So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
DRA And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. BSB BSB: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
DRA They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free? BSB BSB: “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
DRA Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
DRA Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever. BSB BSB: A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.
DRA If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. BSB BSB: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
DRA I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. BSB BSB: I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
DRA I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father. BSB BSB: I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
DRA They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. BSB BSB: “Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.
DRA But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not. BSB BSB: But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
DRA You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God. BSB BSB: You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”
DRA Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me: BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
DRA Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. BSB BSB: Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
DRA You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. BSB BSB: You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 DRA But if I say the truth, you believe me not. BSB BSB: But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!
DRA Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me? BSB BSB: Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
DRA He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God. BSB BSB: Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Before Abraham Was Born, I Am 48 DRA The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? BSB BSB: The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”
DRA Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me. BSB BSB: “I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
DRA But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. BSB BSB: I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.
DRA Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
DRA The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever. BSB BSB: “Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.
DRA Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself? BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”
DRA Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
DRA And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word. BSB BSB: You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
DRA The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? BSB BSB: Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
DRA They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple. BSB BSB: At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
