Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind 3 DRA Jesus answered: Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.
DRA I must work the works of him that sent me, whilst it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. BSB BSB: While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
DRA As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. BSB BSB: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
DRA When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and spread the clay on his eyes, BSB BSB: When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes.
DRA The neighbours therefore, and they who had seen him before that he was a beggar, said: Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said: This is he. BSB BSB: At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”
DRA But others said: No, but he is like him. But he said: I am he. BSB BSB: Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”
DRA They said therefore to him: How were thy eyes opened? BSB BSB: “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
DRA He answered: That man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me: Go to the pool of Siloe, and wash. And I went, I washed, and I see. BSB BSB: He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.”
DRA And they said to him: Where is he? He saith: I know not. BSB BSB: “Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing 13 DRA They bring him that had been blind to the Pharisees. BSB BSB: They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
DRA Now it was the sabbath, when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. BSB BSB: Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
DRA Again therefore the Pharisees asked him, how he had received his sight. But he said to them: He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and I see. BSB BSB: So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
DRA Some therefore of the Pharisees said: This man is not of God, who keepeth not the sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. BSB BSB: Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.
DRA They say therefore to the blind man again: What sayest thou of him that hath opened they eyes? And he said: He is a prophet. BSB BSB: So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.
DRA The Jews then did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight, BSB BSB: The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents
DRA And asked them, saying: Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then doth he now see? BSB BSB: and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”
DRA His parents answered them, and said: We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: BSB BSB: His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.
DRA But how he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: ask himself: he is of age, let him speak for himself. BSB BSB: But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”
DRA These things his parents said, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had already agreed among themselves, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. BSB BSB: His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
DRA Therefore did his parents say: He is of age, ask himself. BSB BSB: That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
DRA They therefore called the man again that had been blind, and said to him: Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner. BSB BSB: So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
DRA He said therefore to them: If he be a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see. BSB BSB: He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”
DRA They said then to him: What did he to thee? How did he open thy eyes? BSB BSB: “What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”
DRA He answered them: I have told you already, and you have heard: why would you hear it again? will you also become his disciples? BSB BSB: He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
DRA They reviled him therefore, and said: Be thou his disciple; but we are the disciples of Moses. BSB BSB: Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.
DRA We know that God spoke to Moses: but as to this man, we know not from whence he is. BSB BSB: We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”
DRA The man answered, and said to them: Why, herein is a wonderful thing, that you know not from whence he is, and he hath opened my eyes. BSB BSB: “That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
DRA Now we know that God doth not hear sinners: but if a man be a server of God, and doth his will, him he heareth. BSB BSB: We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.
DRA From the beginning of the world it hath not been heard, that any man hath opened the eyes of one born blind. BSB BSB: Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
DRA Unless this man were of God, he could not do any thing. BSB BSB: If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”
DRA They answered, and said to him: Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. BSB BSB: They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.
Spiritual Blindness 35 DRA Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said to him: Dost thou believe in the Son of God? BSB BSB: When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
DRA He answered, and said: Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him? BSB BSB: “Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
DRA And Jesus said to him: Thou hast both seen him; and it is he that talketh with thee. BSB BSB: “You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
DRA And he said: I believe, Lord. And falling down, he adored him. BSB BSB: “Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.
DRA And Jesus said: For judgment I am come into this world; that they who see not, may see; and they who see, may become blind. BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”
DRA And some of the Pharisees, who were with him, heard: and they said unto him: Are we also blind? BSB BSB: Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”
DRA Jesus said to them: If you were blind, you should not have sin: but now you say: We see. Your sin remaineth. BSB BSB: “If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
