The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21)
1 DRA And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 DRA Command the children of Israel, and then shalt say to them: When you are entered into the land of Chanaan, and it shall be fallen into your possession by lot, it shall be bounded by these limits: BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3 DRA The south side shall begin from the wilderness of Sin, which is by Edom: and shall have the most salt sea for its furthest limits eastward: BSB BSB: Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,
4 DRA Which limits shall go round on the south side by the ascent of the Scorpion and so into Senna, and reach toward the south as far as Cadesbarne, from whence the frontiers shall go out to the town called Adar, and shall reach as far as Asemona. BSB BSB: cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5 DRA And the limits shall fetch a compass from Asemona to the torrent of Egypt, and shall end in the shore of the great sea. BSB BSB: where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.
6 DRA And the west side shall begin from the great sea, and the same shall be the end thereof. BSB BSB: Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7 DRA But toward the north side the borders shall begin from the great sea, reaching to the most high mountain, BSB BSB: Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8 DRA From which they shall come to Emath, as far as the borders of Sedada: BSB BSB: and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9 DRA And the limits shall go as far as Zephrona, and the village of Enan. These shall be the borders on the north side. BSB BSB: continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10 DRA From thence they shall mark out the bounds towards the east side from the village of Enan unto Sephama. BSB BSB: And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11 DRA And from Sephama the bounds shall go down to Rebla over against the fountain of Daphnis: from thence they shall come eastward to the sea of Cenereth, BSB BSB: then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.
12 DRA And shall reach as far as the Jordan, and at the last shall be closed in by the most salt sea. This shall be your land with its borders round about. BSB BSB: Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13 DRA And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: This shall be the land which you shall possess by lot, and which the Lord hath commanded to be given to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe. BSB BSB: So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14 DRA For the tribe of the children of Ruben by their families, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the number of their kindreds, and half of the tribe of Manasses, BSB BSB: For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15 DRA That is, two tribes and a half, have received their portion beyond the Jordan over against Jericho at the east side. BSB BSB: These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Leaders to Divide the Land 16 DRA And the Lord said to Moses: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 DRA These are the names of the men, that shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Josue the son of Nun, BSB BSB: “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18 DRA And one prince of every tribe, BSB BSB: Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19 DRA Whose names are these: Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone. BSB BSB: These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20 DRA Of the tribe of Simeon, Samuel the son of Ammiud. BSB BSB: Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21 DRA Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chaselon. BSB BSB: Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22 DRA Of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bocci the son of Jogli. BSB BSB: Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23 DRA Of the children of Joseph of the tribe of Manasses, Hanniel the son of Ephod. BSB BSB: Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24 DRA Of the tribe of Ephraim, Camuel the son of Sephtan. BSB BSB: Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25 DRA Of the tribe of Zabulon, Elisaphan the son of Pharnach. BSB BSB: Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26 DRA Of the tribe of Issachar, Phaltiel the prince, the son of Ozan. BSB BSB: Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27 DRA Of the tribe of Aser, Ahiud the son of Salomi. BSB BSB: Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28 DRA Of the tribe of Nephtali: Phedael the son of Ammiud. BSB BSB: and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29 DRA These are they whom the Lord hath commanded to divide the land of Chanaan to the children of Israel. BSB BSB: These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
