BOOK IV From Everlasting to Everlasting 3 DRA Turn not man away to be brought low: and thou hast said: Be converted, O ye sons of men. BSB BSB: You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”
DRA For a thousand years in thy sight are as yesterday, which is past. And as a watch in the night, BSB BSB: For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night.
DRA Things that are counted nothing, shall their years be. BSB BSB: You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning—
DRA In the morning man shall grow up like grass; in the morning he shall flourish and pass away: in the evening he shall fall, grow dry, and wither. BSB BSB: in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers.
DRA For in thy wrath we have fainted away: and are troubled in thy indignation. BSB BSB: For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.
DRA Thou hast set our iniquities before thy eyes: our life in the light of thy countenance. BSB BSB: You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
DRA For all our days are spent; and in thy wrath we have fainted away. Our years shall be considered as a spider: BSB BSB: For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh.
DRA The days of our years in them are threescore and ten years. But if in the strong they be fourscore years: and what is more of them is labour and sorrow. For mildness is come upon us: and we shall be corrected. BSB BSB: The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
DRA Who knoweth the power of thy anger, and for thy fear BSB BSB: Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due.
DRA Can number thy wrath? So make thy right hand known: and men learned in heart, in wisdom. BSB BSB: So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.
DRA Return, O Lord, how long? and be entreated in favour of thy servants. BSB BSB: Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on Your servants.
DRA We are filled in the morning with thy mercy: and we have rejoiced, and are delighted all our days. BSB BSB: Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
DRA We have rejoiced for the days in which thou hast humbled us: for the years in which we have seen evils. BSB BSB: Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
DRA Look upon thy servants and upon their works: and direct their children. BSB BSB: May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children.
DRA And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; yea, the work of our hands do thou direct. BSB BSB: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands—yes, establish the work of our hands!
