A New Heaven and a New Earth (Isaiah 65:17–25)
2 DRA And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. BSB BSB: I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
5 DRA And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things new. And he said to me: Write, for these words are most faithful and true. BSB BSB: And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”
6 DRA And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely. BSB BSB: And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give freely from the spring of the water of life.
7 DRA He that shall overcome shall possess these things, and I will be his God; and he shall be my son. BSB BSB: The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.
8 DRA But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, they shall have their portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. BSB BSB: But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”
The New Jerusalem 9 DRA And there came one of the seven angels, who had the vials full of the seven last plagues, and spoke with me, saying: Come, and I will shew thee the bride, the wife of the Lamb. BSB BSB: Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
10 DRA And he took me up in spirit to a great and high mountain: and he shewed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, BSB BSB: And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,
11 DRA Having the glory of God, and the light thereof was like to a precious stone, as to the jasper stone, even as crystal. BSB BSB: shining with the glory of God. Its radiance was like a most precious jewel, like a jasper, as clear as crystal.
12 DRA And it had a wall great and high, having twelve gates, and in the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. BSB BSB: The city had a great and high wall with twelve gates inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, and twelve angels at the gates.
13 DRA On the east, three gates: and on the north, three gates: and on the south, three gates: and on the west, three gates. BSB BSB: There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west.
14 DRA And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them, the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. BSB BSB: The wall of the city had twelve foundations bearing the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 DRA And he that spoke with me, had a measure of a reed of gold, to measure the city and the gates thereof, and the wall. BSB BSB: The angel who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and walls.
16 DRA And the city lieth in a foursquare, and the length thereof is as great as the breadth: and he measured the city with the golden reed for twelve thousand furlongs, and the length and the height and the breadth thereof are equal. BSB BSB: The city lies foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he measured the city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia in length and width and height.
17 DRA And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and forty-four cubits, the measure of a man, which is of an angel. BSB BSB: And he measured its wall to be 144 cubits, by the human measure the angel was using.
18 DRA And the building of the wall thereof was of jasper stone: but the city itself pure gold, like to clear glass. BSB BSB: The wall was made of jasper, and the city itself of pure gold, as pure as glass.
19 DRA And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper: the second, sapphire: the third, a chalcedony: the fourth, an emerald: BSB BSB: The foundations of the city walls were adorned with every kind of precious stone: The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,
20 DRA The fifth, sardonyx: the sixth, sardius: the seventh, chrysolite: the eighth, beryl: the ninth, a topaz: the tenth, a chrysoprasus: the eleventh, a jacinth: the twelfth, an amethyst. BSB BSB: the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
21 DRA And the twelve gates are twelve pearls, one to each: and every several gate was of one several pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. BSB BSB: And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, with each gate consisting of a single pearl. The main street of the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
22 DRA And I saw no temple therein. For the Lord God Almighty is the temple thereof, and the Lamb. BSB BSB: But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
23 DRA And the city hath no need of the sun, nor of the moon, to shine in it. For the glory of God hath enlightened it, and the Lamb is the lamp thereof. BSB BSB: And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp.
24 DRA And the nations shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory and honour into it. BSB BSB: By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory.
25 DRA And the gates thereof shall not be shut by day: for there shall be no night there. BSB BSB: Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day, because there will be no night there.
26 DRA And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. BSB BSB: And into the city will be brought the glory and honor of the nations.
27 DRA There shall not enter into it any thing defiled, or that worketh abomination or maketh a lie, but they that are written in the book of life of the Lamb. BSB BSB: But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
