A Remnant Chosen by Grace 2 DRA God hath not cast away his people, which he foreknew. Know you not what the scripture saith of Elias; how he calleth on God against Israel? BSB BSB: God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
DRA Lord, they have slain thy prophets, they have dug down thy altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. BSB BSB: “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well”?
DRA But what saith the divine answer to him? I have left me seven thousand men, that have not bowed their knees to Baal. BSB BSB: And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
DRA Even so then at this present time also, there is a remnant saved according to the election of grace. BSB BSB: In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
DRA And if by grace, it is not now by works: otherwise grace is no more grace. BSB BSB: And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.
DRA What then? That which Israel sought, he hath not obtained: but the election hath obtained it; and the rest have been blinded. BSB BSB: What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
DRA As it is written: God hath given them the spirit of insensibility; eyes that they should not see; and ears that they should not hear, until this present day. BSB BSB: as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
DRA And David saith: Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompense unto them. BSB BSB: And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
DRA Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always. BSB BSB: May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”
The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11 DRA I say then, have they so stumbled, that they should fall? God forbid. But by their offence, salvation is come to the Gentiles, that they may be emulous of them. BSB BSB: I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.
DRA Now if the offence of them be the riches of the world, and the diminution of them, the riches of the Gentiles; how much more the fulness of them? BSB BSB: But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
DRA For I say to you, Gentiles: as long indeed as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I will honour my ministry, BSB BSB: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
DRA If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them. BSB BSB: in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.
DRA For if the loss of them be the reconciliation of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? BSB BSB: For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
DRA For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. BSB BSB: If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
DRA And if some of the branches be broken, and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them, and art made partaker of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree, BSB BSB: Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root,
DRA Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. BSB BSB: do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
DRA Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. BSB BSB: You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”
DRA Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear. BSB BSB: That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
DRA For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee. BSB BSB: For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not spare you either.
DRA See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. BSB BSB: Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
DRA And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. BSB BSB: And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
DRA For if thou wert cut out of the wild olive tree, which is natural to thee; and, contrary to nature, were grafted into the good olive tree; how much more shall they that are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? BSB BSB: For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved 26 DRA And so all Israel should be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Sion, he that shall deliver, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. BSB BSB: And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
DRA And this is to them my covenant: when I shall take away their sins. BSB BSB: And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
DRA For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance. BSB BSB: For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
DRA For as you also in times past did not believe God, but now have obtained mercy, through their unbelief; BSB BSB: Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
DRA So these also now have not believed, for your mercy, that they also may obtain mercy. BSB BSB: so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.
DRA For God hath concluded all in unbelief, that he may have mercy on all. BSB BSB: For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
A Hymn of Praise (Isaiah 40:9–31)
DRA For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor? BSB BSB: “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?”
DRA Or who hath first given to him, and recompense shall be made him? BSB BSB: “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
DRA For of him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen. BSB BSB: For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
