Twenty-Four Divisions of Priests 1 UDB These are the divisions of the descendants of Aaron the first high priest: Aaron's four sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. BSB BSB: These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2 UDB But Nadab and Abihu died before their father died, and they had no children. So their younger brothers Eleazar and Ithamar became the priests. BSB BSB: But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.
3 UDB Zadok, who was a descendant of Eleazar, and Ahimelek, who was a descendant of Ithamar, helped David to separate the family groups into two groups. Each group had certain duties. BSB BSB: With the help of Eleazar’s descendant Zadok and Ithamar’s descendant Ahimelech, David divided them according to the offices of their service.
4 UDB There were more leaders among the descendants of Eleazar than there were among the descendants of Ithamar. So they appointed sixteen leaders from Eleazar's descendants and eight leaders from Ithamar's descendants. BSB BSB: Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than those of Ithamar, they were divided accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of Eleazar and eight from the descendants of Ithamar.
5 UDB There were temple officials and priests who were there, including descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar, to make sure that the work was divided fairly. So they decided what work each group would do by casting lots. BSB BSB: Thus they were divided by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants.
6 UDB Shemaiah son of Nethanel, who was a descendant of Levi, wrote down the names of the leaders of each group while David and his officials were watching. Zadok the high priest, Ahimelek his assistant, and the leaders of the families of the priests and of the families of the other descendants of Levi also watched. BSB BSB: The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar.
7 UDB Jehoiarib was the first one whose name was selected by casting lots. Next, Jedaiah was selected. BSB BSB: The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,
8 UDB Next, Harim was selected. Next, Seorim was selected. BSB BSB: the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,
9 UDB Next, Malkijah was selected. Next, Mijamin was selected. BSB BSB: the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

19 UDB Those were the men who were chosen to be the leaders of the groups that would serve in the temple, obeying the regulations that were set down by Aaron; regulations that Yahweh, the God to whom the Israelite people belong, had given to him. BSB BSB: This was their appointed order for service when they entered the house of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
The Rest of the Levites 20 UDB This is a list of some of the other descendants of Levi: From the sons of Amram there was Shubael. From the sons of Shubael there was Jehdeiah. BSB BSB: Now these were the rest of the descendants of Levi: From the sons of Amram: Shubael; from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.
21 UDB From Rehabiah son of Eleazar there was Isshiah, his oldest son. BSB BSB: As for Rehabiah, from his sons: The first was Isshiah.
22 UDB From the descendants of Kohath's son Izhar there was Shelomoth. From the descendants of Shelomoth there was Jahath. BSB BSB: From the Izharites: Shelomoth; from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.
23 UDB From the descendants of Kohath's son Hebron there was his oldest son Jeriah and Jeriah's younger brothers Amariah, Jahaziel, and Jekameam. BSB BSB: From the sons of Hebron: Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.
24 UDB From the descendants of Kohath's son Uzziel there was Micah. From the descendants of Micah there was Shamir. BSB BSB: From the sons of Uzziel: Micah; from the sons of Micah: Shamir.
25 UDB And Micah's younger brother was Isshiah. From the descendants of Isshiah was Zechariah. BSB BSB: The brother of Micah: Isshiah; from the sons of Isshiah: Zechariah.
26 UDB The sons of Merari were Mahli, Mushi, and Jaaziah. BSB BSB: The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah: Beno.
27 UDB From the descendants of Jaaziah there were Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. BSB BSB: The descendants of Merari from Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.
28 UDB Mahli's son Eleazar did not have any sons. BSB BSB: From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.
29 UDB From the descendants of Kish there was his son Jerahmeel. BSB BSB: From Kish: Jerahmeel the son of Kish.
30 UDB The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. Those were descendants of Levi who were listed according to the leaders of their families. BSB BSB: And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites, according to their families.
31 UDB The jobs they would do were decided by casting lots like their fellow Israelites the descendants of Aaron, did. They cast lots while King David, Zadok, Ahimelek, and the leaders of the families of the priests and the other descendants of Levi watched. The jobs that were given to the families of each oldest brother and each youngest brother were equal. BSB BSB: As their brothers the descendants of Aaron did, they also cast lots in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and Levites—the family heads and their younger brothers alike.
