Twenty-Four Divisions of Musicians 1 UDB David and some of the temple officials chose some of the descendants of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to be in charge of the preaching and to play harps and lyres and cymbals. This is a list of the men whom they chose for that work: BSB BSB: Additionally, David and the commanders of the army set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to prophesy with the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. The following is the list of the men who performed this service:
2 UDB From the sons of Asaph they chose Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. Asaph supervised them, and the king appointed Asaph to preach. BSB BSB: From the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah. These sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king.
3 UDB From the sons of Jeduthun they chose six men: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah. Jeduthun supervised them and also preached, playing his harp while he thanked and praised Yahweh. BSB BSB: From the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—six in all—under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with the harp, giving thanks and praise to the LORD.
4 UDB From the sons of Heman they chose Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. BSB BSB: From the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.
5 UDB They were all sons of Heman, who was King David's prophet. God promised to cause Heman to be strong, so altogether God gave him fourteen sons and three daughters. BSB BSB: All these sons of Heman the king’s seer were given him through the promises of God to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.
6 UDB All those men were supervised by their fathers while they played music in the temple of Yahweh. They played cymbals, lyres, and harps. And their fathers—Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman—were supervised by the king. BSB BSB: All these were under the direction of their fathers for the music of the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the direction of the king.
7 UDB Those men and their relatives were all trained and skilled for playing musical instruments in the temple. That was their work for Yahweh. Including their relatives, there were 288 of them. BSB BSB: Together with their relatives, who were all trained and skillful in the songs of the LORD, they numbered 288.
8 UDB All of them—it did not matter whether they were young or old, a teacher or a student—cast lots to determine what work they would do. BSB BSB: They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.
9 UDB From the family of Asaph, the first ones selected were Joseph and twelve of his sons and relatives. BSB BSB: The first lot, which was for Asaph, fell to Joseph, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all; the second to Gedaliah, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;
10 UDB Next, Gedaliah and twelve of his sons and relatives were selected. BSB BSB: the third to Zaccur, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;
11 UDB Next, Zaccur and twelve of his sons and relatives were selected. BSB BSB: the fourth to Izri, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;
12 UDB Next, Nethaniah and twelve of his sons and relatives were selected. BSB BSB: the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons, and his brothers—12 in all;
