Prophecy and Tongues 1 UEB Pursue love and be zealous for spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. BSB BSB: Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
UEB For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. For no one understands him because he speaks hidden things in the Spirit. BSB BSB: For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
UEB But the one who prophesies speaks to people to build them up, to encourage them, and to comfort them. BSB BSB: But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort.
UEB The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. BSB BSB: The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
UEB Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues. But even more than that, I wish that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues (unless someone interprets so that the church may be built up). BSB BSB: I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified.
UEB But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you? I cannot, unless I speak to you with revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or teaching. BSB BSB: Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
UEB If lifeless instruments are producing sounds—like the flute or the harp—and they do not produce different tones, how will anyone know what tune the flute or harp is playing? BSB BSB: Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone recognize the tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct?
UEB For if the trumpet is played with an uncertain sound, how will anyone know when it is time to prepare for battle? BSB BSB: Again, if the trumpet sounds a muffled call, who will prepare for battle?
UEB So it is with you. If you utter speech that is unintelligible, how will anyone understand what you have said? You will be speaking, and no one will understand you. BSB BSB: So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
UEB There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning. BSB BSB: Assuredly, there are many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.
UEB But if I do not know the meaning of a language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me. BSB BSB: If, then, I do not know the meaning of someone’s language, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.
UEB So it is with you. Since you are eager for the manifestations of the Spirit, try to excel in the gifts that build up the church. BSB BSB: It is the same with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, strive to excel in gifts that build up the church.
UEB So the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. BSB BSB: Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.
UEB For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. BSB BSB: For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
UEB What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, and I will also sing with my mind. BSB BSB: What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
UEB Otherwise, if you praise God with the spirit, how will the outsider say "Amen" when you are giving thanks if he does not know what you are saying? BSB BSB: Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is uninstructed say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
UEB For you certainly give thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up. BSB BSB: You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other one is not edified.
UEB I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. BSB BSB: I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
UEB But in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding so that I might instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. BSB BSB: But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
UEB Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Rather, in regard to evil, be like infants. But in your thinking be mature. BSB BSB: Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.
UEB In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. Even then they will not hear me," says the Lord. BSB BSB: It is written in the Law: “By strange tongues and foreign lips I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to Me, says the Lord.”
UEB So then, tongues are a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers. But prophesying is for a sign, not for unbelievers, but for believers. BSB BSB: Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
UEB If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders and unbelievers come in, would they not say that you are insane? BSB BSB: So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who are uninstructed or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
UEB But if you all were prophesying and an unbeliever or an outsider came in, he would be convicted by all he hears. He would be judged by all that is said. BSB BSB: But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in while everyone is prophesying, he will be convicted and called to account by all,
UEB The secrets of his heart would be revealed. As a result, he would fall on his face and worship God. He would declare that God is really among you. BSB BSB: and the secrets of his heart will be made known. So he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”
Orderly Worship 26 UEB What is next then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Do everything so that you build up the church. BSB BSB: What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
UEB If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at most three, and each one in turn, then someone should interpret what is said. BSB BSB: If anyone speaks in a tongue, two, or at most three, should speak in turn, and someone must interpret.
UEB But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in the church. Let each one speak to himself alone and to God. BSB BSB: But if there is no interpreter, he should remain silent in the church and speak only to himself and God.
UEB Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others listen with discernment to what is said. BSB BSB: Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
UEB But if an insight is given to one who is sitting in the service, let the one who had been speaking be silent. BSB BSB: And if a revelation comes to someone who is seated, the first speaker should stop.
UEB For each of you can prophesy one by one so that each one may learn and all may be encouraged. BSB BSB: For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.
UEB For the spirits of the prophets are under the control of the prophets. BSB BSB: The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.
UEB For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. This is the rule in all the churches of the saints. BSB BSB: For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace—as in all the churches of the saints.
UEB If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. BSB BSB: If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
UEB Did the word of God come from you? Are you the only ones it has reached? BSB BSB: Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?
UEB If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I write to you are a command of the Lord. BSB BSB: If anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, let him acknowledge that what I am writing you is the Lord’s command.
UEB But if anyone does not recognize this, let him not be recognized. BSB BSB: But if anyone ignores this, he himself will be ignored.
UEB So then, brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid anyone from speaking in tongues. BSB BSB: So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
UEB But let all things be done properly and in order. BSB BSB: But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.
