The Tower of Babel (Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)
UEB Now the whole earth used one language and had the same words. BSB BSB: Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
UEB As they journeyed in the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they settled there. BSB BSB: And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
UEB They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick instead of stone and tar as mortar. BSB BSB: And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
UEB They said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top will reach to the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves. If we do not, we will be scattered across the surface of the whole earth." BSB BSB: “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
UEB So Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower which the descendants of Adam had built. BSB BSB: Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
UEB Yahweh said, "Look, they are one people with the same language, and they are beginning to do this! Soon nothing that they intend to do will be impossible for them. BSB BSB: And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them.
UEB Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they may not understand each other." BSB BSB: Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
UEB So Yahweh scattered them from there across the surface of all the earth and they stopped building the city. BSB BSB: So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
UEB Therefore, its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of the whole earth and from there Yahweh scattered them abroad over the surface of all the earth. BSB BSB: That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
