The Seventh Day (Exodus 16:22–30; Hebrews 4:1–11)
UEB Then the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the living things that filled them. BSB BSB: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
UEB On the seventh day God came to the end of his work which he had done, and so he rested on the seventh day from all his work. BSB BSB: And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
UEB God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he rested from all his work which he had done in his creation. BSB BSB: Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
Man and Woman in the Garden 5 UEB No bush of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. BSB BSB: Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
UEB But a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. BSB BSB: But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
UEB Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. BSB BSB: And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
UEB Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. This included the tree of life that was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. BSB BSB: Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
UEB A river went out of Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became four rivers. BSB BSB: Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
UEB The name of the first is Pishon. It is the one which flows throughout the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. BSB BSB: The name of the first river is the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
UEB The gold of that land is good. There are also bdellium and the onyx stone. BSB BSB: And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
UEB The name of the second river is Gihon. This one flows throughout the whole land of Cush. BSB BSB: The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
UEB The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Ashur. The fourth river is the Euphrates. BSB BSB: The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
UEB Yahweh God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to work it and to maintain it. BSB BSB: Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
UEB But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not eat, for on the day that you eat from it, you will surely die." BSB BSB: but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
UEB The man gave names to all the livestock, to all the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field. But for the man himself there was found no helper suitable for him. BSB BSB: The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
UEB Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, so the man slept. Yahweh God took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh where he took the rib. BSB BSB: So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
UEB With the rib that Yahweh God had taken from the man, he made a woman and brought her to the man. BSB BSB: And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
UEB The man said, "This time, this one is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken out of man." BSB BSB: And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
UEB They were both naked, the man and his wife, but were not ashamed. BSB BSB: And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
