The Birth of Isaac 1 UEB Yahweh paid attention to Sarah as he had said he would, and Yahweh did for Sarah just as he had promised. BSB BSB: Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.
UEB Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. BSB BSB: So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised.
UEB Abraham named his son, the one who had been born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. BSB BSB: And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore to him.
UEB Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, just as God had commanded him. BSB BSB: When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.
UEB Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. BSB BSB: Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
UEB Sarah said, "God has made me laugh; every one who hears will laugh with me." BSB BSB: Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of this will laugh with me.”
UEB She also said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children, and yet I have borne him a son in his old age!" BSB BSB: She added, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
UEB The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. BSB BSB: So the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
Sarah Turns against Hagar (Galatians 4:21–30)
UEB Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. BSB BSB: But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking her son,
UEB So she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman will not be heir with my son, with Isaac." BSB BSB: and she said to Abraham, “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
UEB This thing was very grievous to Abraham because of his son. BSB BSB: Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son Ishmael.
UEB I will also make the son of the servant woman into a nation, because he is your descendant." BSB BSB: But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
UEB Abraham rose up early in the morning, took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder. He gave her the boy and sent her away. She departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. BSB BSB: Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the boy. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
UEB When the water in the waterskin was gone, she abandoned the child under one of the bushes. BSB BSB: When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
UEB Then she went, and sat down a short distance from him, about the distance of a bowshot away, for she said, "Let me not look upon the death of the child." As she sat there across from him, she lifted up her voice and wept. BSB BSB: Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and wept.
UEB Get up, raise up the lad, and encourage him; for I will make him into a great nation." BSB BSB: Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
UEB Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. BSB BSB: Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
UEB God was with the lad, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer. BSB BSB: And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
UEB He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt. BSB BSB: And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
The Covenant at Beersheba 22 UEB It came about at that time that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do. BSB BSB: At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
UEB Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my offspring, nor with my descendants. Show to me and to the land in which you have been staying the same covenant faithfulness that I have shown to you." BSB BSB: Now, therefore, swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
UEB Abraham said, "I swear." BSB BSB: And Abraham replied, “I swear it.”
UEB Abraham also complained to Abimelech concerning a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized from him. BSB BSB: But when Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had seized,
UEB Abimelech said, "I do not know who has done this thing. You did not tell me before now; I have not heard of it until today." BSB BSB: Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until today.”
UEB So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. BSB BSB: So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.
UEB Then Abraham set seven female lambs of the flock by themselves. BSB BSB: Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock,
UEB Abimelech said to Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven female lambs that you have set by themselves?" BSB BSB: and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven ewe lambs?”
UEB He replied, "These seven female lambs you will receive from my hand, so that it may be a witness for me, that I dug this well." BSB BSB: He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I dug this well.”
UEB So he called that place Beersheba, because there they both swore an oath. BSB BSB: So that place was called Beersheba, because it was there that the two of them swore an oath.
UEB They made a covenant at Beersheba, and then Abimelech and Phicol, the captain of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines. BSB BSB: After they had made the covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
UEB Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba. There he worshiped Yahweh, the eternal God. BSB BSB: And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
UEB Abraham remained as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines many days. BSB BSB: And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
