The Offering of Isaac (John 3:1–21)
UEB Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains there, which I will tell you about." BSB BSB: “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” 3 UEB So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, along with Isaac his son. He cut the wood for the burnt offering, then set out on his journey to the place that God had told him about. BSB BSB: So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
UEB On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place afar off. BSB BSB: On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
UEB Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father," and he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "See, here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" BSB BSB: Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
UEB When they came to the place that God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood on it. Then he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. BSB BSB: When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood.
UEB Abraham reached out with his hand and took up the knife to kill his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
The LORD Provides the Sacrifice 12 UEB He said, "Do not lay your hand upon the lad, nor do anything to harm him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing that you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." BSB BSB: “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
UEB Abraham looked up and behold, behind him was a ram caught in the bushes by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up as a burnt offering instead of his son. BSB BSB: Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
UEB So Abraham called that place, "Yahweh will provide," and it is said to this day, "On the mountain of Yahweh it will be provided." BSB BSB: And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
UEB The angel of Yahweh called to Abraham a second time from heaven BSB BSB: And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
UEB and said—this is Yahweh's declaration—by myself I have sworn that because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, BSB BSB: saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son,
UEB I will surely bless you and I will greatly multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and your descendants will possess the gate of their enemies. BSB BSB: I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
UEB Through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice." BSB BSB: And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
UEB So Abraham returned to his young men, and they departed and went together to Beersheba, and he lived at Beersheba. BSB BSB: Abraham went back to his servants, and they got up and set out together for Beersheba. And Abraham settled in Beersheba.
The Sons of Nahor 20 UEB It came about after these things that Abraham was told, "Milkah has borne children, as well, to your brother Nahor." BSB BSB: Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother Nahor:
UEB They were Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, BSB BSB: Uz the firstborn, his brother Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram),
UEB Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel. BSB BSB: Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”
UEB Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These were the eight children that Milkah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. BSB BSB: And Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.
UEB His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. BSB BSB: Moreover, Nahor’s concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
