Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife 1 UEB Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh who was captain of the guard and an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
UEB Yahweh was with Joseph and he became a prosperous man. He lived in the house of his Egyptian master. BSB BSB: And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.
UEB His master saw that Yahweh was with him and that Yahweh prospered everything that he did. BSB BSB: When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did,
UEB Joseph found favor in his sight. He served Potiphar. Potiphar made Joseph manager over his house, and everything that he possessed, he put under his care. BSB BSB: Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned.
UEB It came about from the time that he made him manager over his house and over everything he possessed, that Yahweh blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The blessing of Yahweh was on everything that Potiphar had in the house and in the field. BSB BSB: From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field.
UEB Potiphar put everything that he had under Joseph's care. He did not have to think about anything except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and attractive. BSB BSB: So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
UEB It came about after this that his master's wife lusted for Joseph. She said, "Sleep with me." BSB BSB: and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
UEB But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not pay attention to what I do in the house, and he has put everything that he owns under my care. BSB BSB: But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
UEB No one is greater in this house than I am. He has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" BSB BSB: No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
UEB She spoke to Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her or to be with her. BSB BSB: Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her.
UEB It came about one day that he went into the house to do his work. None of the men of the house were there in the house. BSB BSB: One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside.
UEB She caught him by his clothes and said, "Sleep with me." He left his clothing in her hand, fled, and went outside. BSB BSB: She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his cloak in her hand, he escaped and ran outside.
Joseph Falsely Imprisoned 13 UEB It came about, when she saw that he had left his clothing in her hand and had fled outside, BSB BSB: When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
UEB that she called to the men of her house and told them, "See, Potiphar has brought in a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to sleep with me, and I screamed. BSB BSB: she called her household servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could.
UEB It came about when he heard me scream, that he left his clothing with me, fled, and went outside." BSB BSB: When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
UEB She set his clothing next to her until his master came home. BSB BSB: So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s cloak beside her until his master came home.
UEB She told him this explanation, "The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us, came in to mock me. BSB BSB: Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me,
UEB It came about that when I screamed, he left his clothing with me and fled outside." BSB BSB: but when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
UEB It came about that, when his master heard the explanation his wife told him, "This is what your servant did to me," he became very angry. BSB BSB: When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger.
UEB Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. He was there in the prison. BSB BSB: So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was there in the prison,
UEB But Yahweh was with Joseph and showed covenant faithfulness to him. He gave him favor in the sight of the prison warden. BSB BSB: the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
UEB The prison warden gave into Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, Joseph was in charge of it. BSB BSB: And the warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison.
UEB The prison warden did not worry about anything that was in his hand, because Yahweh was with him. Whatever he did, Yahweh prospered. BSB BSB: The warden did not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
