Jesus Teaches at the Feast 1 UEB After these things Jesus traveled about in Galilee, for he did not want to go into Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill him. BSB BSB: After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.
UEB Now the Jewish Festival of Shelters was near. BSB BSB: However, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.
UEB His brothers therefore said to him, "Leave this place and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works that you do. BSB BSB: So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.
UEB No one does anything in secret if he himself wants to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world." BSB BSB: For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.”
UEB Jesus therefore said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. BSB BSB: Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
UEB The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. BSB BSB: The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify that its works are evil.
UEB You go up to the festival; I am not going to this festival because my time has not yet been fulfilled." BSB BSB: Go up to the feast on your own. I am not going up to this feast, because My time has not yet come.”
UEB After he said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee. BSB BSB: Having said this, Jesus remained in Galilee.
UEB But when his brothers had gone up to the festival, then he also went up, not publicly but in secret. BSB BSB: But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went—not publicly, but in secret.
UEB The Jews were looking for him at the festival and said, "Where is he?" BSB BSB: So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?”
UEB There was much discussion among the crowds about him. Some said, "He is a good man." Others said, "No, he leads the crowds astray." BSB BSB: Many in the crowds were whispering about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”
UEB Yet no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews. BSB BSB: Yet no one would speak publicly about Him for fear of the Jews.
UEB When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. BSB BSB: About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.
UEB Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, but is of him who sent me. BSB BSB: “My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
UEB If anyone wishes to do his will, he will know about this teaching, whether it comes from God, or whether I speak from myself. BSB BSB: If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
UEB Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him, that person is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. BSB BSB: He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory, but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is a man of truth; in Him there is no falsehood.
UEB Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?" BSB BSB: Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”
UEB The crowd answered, "You have a demon. Who seeks to kill you?" BSB BSB: “You have a demon,” the crowd replied. “Who is trying to kill You?”
UEB Jesus answered and said to them, "I did one work, and you all marvel because of it. BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
UEB Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the ancestors), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. BSB BSB: But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
UEB If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath? BSB BSB: If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
UEB Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteously." BSB BSB: Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.”
Is Jesus the Christ? 25 UEB Some of them from Jerusalem said, "Is not this the one they seek to kill? BSB BSB: Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
UEB See, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. It cannot be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ, can it? BSB BSB: Yet here He is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying anything to Him. Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?
UEB Yet we know where this one is from. But when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from." BSB BSB: But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”
UEB Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, "You both know me and know where I come from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, and you do not know him. BSB BSB: Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,
UEB I know him because I come from him and he sent me." BSB BSB: but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
UEB They were trying to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come. BSB BSB: So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
UEB But many in the crowd believed in him, and they said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than what this one has done?" BSB BSB: Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
UEB The Pharisees heard the crowds whispering these things about Jesus, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. BSB BSB: When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.
UEB Jesus then said, "I am still with you for a short amount of time, and then I go to him who sent me. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
UEB You will seek me but you will not find me; where I go, you will not be able to come." BSB BSB: You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
UEB The Jews therefore said among themselves, "Where will this man go that we will not be able to find him? Will he go to the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? BSB BSB: At this, the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go that we will not find Him? Will He go where the Jews are dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
UEB What is this word that he said, 'You will seek me but will not find me; where I go, you will not be able to come'?" BSB BSB: What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for Me, but you will not find Me,’ and, ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
Living Water 37 UEB Now on the last, great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. BSB BSB: On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
UEB He who believes in me, just as the scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his stomach." BSB BSB: Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”
UEB But he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him would receive; the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus was not yet glorified. BSB BSB: He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Division over Jesus 40 UEB Some of the crowd, when they heard these words, said, "This is indeed the prophet." BSB BSB: On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
UEB Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Does the Christ come from Galilee? BSB BSB: Others declared, “This is the Christ.” But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?
UEB Have the scriptures not said that the Christ will come from the descendants of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" BSB BSB: Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Christ will come from the line of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”
UEB So there arose a division in the crowds because of him. BSB BSB: So there was division in the crowd because of Jesus.
UEB Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him. BSB BSB: Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.
The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders 45 UEB Then the officers came back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" BSB BSB: Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”
UEB The officers answered, "Never has anyone spoken like this." BSB BSB: “Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered.
UEB So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? BSB BSB: “Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees.
UEB Have any of the rulers believed in him, or any of the Pharisees? BSB BSB: “Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
UEB But this crowd that does not know the law, they are cursed." BSB BSB: But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”
UEB Nicodemus (one of the Pharisees, who came to him earlier) said to them, BSB BSB: Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
UEB "Does our law judge a man before hearing from him and knowing what he does?" BSB BSB: “Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
UEB They answered and said to him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee." BSB BSB: “Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
