The Faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5–13; John 4:43–54)
UEB After Jesus had finished everything he was saying in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. BSB BSB: When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
UEB Now a centurion had a slave who was highly regarded by him, and he was sick and about to die. BSB BSB: There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick and about to die.
UEB When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. BSB BSB: When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to come and heal his servant.
UEB When they had come to Jesus, they asked him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, BSB BSB: They came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is worthy to have You grant this,
UEB So Jesus continued on his way with them. But when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, because I am not worthy for you to come under my roof. BSB BSB: So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.
UEB For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you, but just say a word and my servant will be healed. BSB BSB: That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
UEB For I also am a man who is under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another one, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." BSB BSB: For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes, and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”
UEB When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, "I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." BSB BSB: When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
UEB When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant was well. BSB BSB: And when the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son 11 UEB Soon after that, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. BSB BSB: Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
UEB As he came near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother (who was a widow), and a rather large crowd from the town was with her. BSB BSB: As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
UEB When the Lord saw her, he was deeply moved with compassion for her and said to her, "Do not cry." BSB BSB: When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”
UEB Then he went up and touched the wooden frame on which they carried the body, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." BSB BSB: Then He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!”
UEB The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. BSB BSB: And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
UEB Then fear overcame all of them, and they kept praising God, saying, "A great prophet has been raised among us" and "God has looked upon his people." BSB BSB: A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”
UEB This news about Jesus spread throughout the whole of Judea and all the neighboring regions. BSB BSB: And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.
John’s Inquiry (Matthew 11:1–6)
UEB John's disciples told him about all these things. BSB BSB: Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.
UEB Then John called two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to say, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" BSB BSB: So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
UEB When they had come near to Jesus, the men said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to say, 'Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?'" BSB BSB: When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’”
UEB In that hour he healed many people from sicknesses and afflictions and from evil spirits, and to many blind people he gave sight. BSB BSB: At that very hour Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.
UEB Jesus answered and said to them, "After you have gone on your way, report to John what you have seen and heard. Blind people are receiving sight, lame people are walking, lepers are being cleansed, deaf people are hearing, people who have died are being raised back to life, and needy people are being told the good news. BSB BSB: So He replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
UEB The person who does not stop believing in me because of my actions is blessed." BSB BSB: Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Matthew 11:7–19)
UEB After John's messengers had gone away, Jesus began to say to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind? BSB BSB: After John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
UEB But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear expensive clothing and who live in luxury are in kings' palaces. BSB BSB: Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.
UEB But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. BSB BSB: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
UEB This is he of whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.' BSB BSB: This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
UEB I say to you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he is." BSB BSB: I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
UEB (When all the people heard this, including the tax collectors, they declared that God is righteous, because they had been baptized with the baptism of John. BSB BSB: All the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. For they had received the baptism of John.
UEB But the Pharisees and the experts in Jewish law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) BSB BSB: But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.
UEB "To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? BSB BSB: “To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like?
UEB They are like children playing in the marketplace, who sit and call to one another and say, 'We played a flute for you, and you did not dance. We sang a funeral song, and you did not cry.' BSB BSB: They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
UEB For John the Baptist came eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' BSB BSB: For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
UEB The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, he is a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' BSB BSB: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
UEB But wisdom is justified by all her children." BSB BSB: But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8)
UEB Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. So after Jesus entered into the Pharisee's house, he reclined at the table to eat. BSB BSB: Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
UEB Behold, there was a woman in the city who was a sinner. When she found out that he was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfumed oil. BSB BSB: When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.
UEB As she stood behind him near his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with perfumed oil. BSB BSB: As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.
UEB When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he thought to himself, saying, "If this man were a prophet, then he would know who and what type of woman is touching him, that she is a sinner." BSB BSB: When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a sinner!”
UEB Jesus responded and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." He said, "Say it, Teacher!" BSB BSB: But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he said.
UEB Jesus said, "A certain moneylender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. BSB BSB: “Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
UEB When they could not pay him, he forgave them both. Therefore, which of them will love him more?" BSB BSB: When they were unable to repay him, he forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”
UEB Simon answered him and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave the most." Jesus said to him, "You have judged correctly." BSB BSB: “I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
UEB Jesus turned to the woman and said to Simon, "You see this woman. I have entered into your house. You gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. BSB BSB: And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
UEB You did not give me a kiss, but from the time I came in she did not stop kissing my feet. BSB BSB: You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived.
UEB You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfumed oil. BSB BSB: You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.
UEB Therefore I say to you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven—for she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little." BSB BSB: Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”
UEB Then he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
UEB Those reclining together began to say among themselves, "Who is this that even forgives sins?" BSB BSB: But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
UEB Then Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace." BSB BSB: And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
