Greetings from Paul and Timothy (Philippians 1:1–2; Colossians 1:1–2)
UEB Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and the brother Timothy to Philemon, our dear friend and fellow worker, BSB BSB: Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker,
UEB and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets in your home. BSB BSB: to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets at your house:
UEB May grace be to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Faith and Love 4 UEB I always thank my God. I mention you in my prayers. BSB BSB: I always thank my God, remembering you in my prayers,
UEB I have heard of the love and the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus and for all the believers. BSB BSB: because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.
UEB I pray that the fellowship of your faith may be effective for the knowledge of everything good that is among us in Christ. BSB BSB: I pray that your partnership in the faith may become effective as you fully acknowledge every good thing that is ours in Christ.
UEB For I have had much joy and comfort because of your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother. BSB BSB: I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus 8 UEB Therefore, although I have all the boldness in Christ to command you to do what you should do, BSB BSB: So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you to do what is proper,
UEB yet because of love, I appeal to you instead—I, Paul, an old man, and now a prisoner for Christ Jesus. BSB BSB: I prefer to appeal on the basis of love. For I, Paul, am now aged, and a prisoner of Christ Jesus as well.
UEB I am asking you concerning my child Onesimus, whom I have fathered in my chains. BSB BSB: I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains.
UEB For he once was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me. BSB BSB: Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
UEB I have sent him back to you, he who is my very heart. BSB BSB: I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.
UEB I wish I could have kept him with me, so he could serve me for you, while I am in chains for the sake of the gospel. BSB BSB: I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
UEB But I did not want to do anything without your consent. I did not want your good deed to be from necessity but from good will. BSB BSB: But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of compulsion, but by your own free will.
UEB So if you have me as a partner, receive him as me. BSB BSB: So if you consider me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
UEB If he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge that to me. BSB BSB: But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
UEB I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I myself will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your own self! BSB BSB: I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
UEB Yes, brother, do me a favor in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. BSB BSB: Yes, brother, let me have some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.
UEB Confident about your obedience, I am writing to you. I know that you will do even more than I ask. BSB BSB: Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
UEB At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be given back to you. BSB BSB: In the meantime, prepare a guest room for me, because I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
Additional Greetings 23 UEB Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you. BSB BSB: Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings,
UEB So do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. BSB BSB: as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers.
UEB May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. BSB BSB: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
