Deliverance from False Prophets (Jude 1:3–16)
ULT Now false prophets were also among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will bring in heresies of destruction, and denying the master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. BSB BSB: Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
ULT And many will follow their licentious acts, because of whom the way of truth will be slandered. BSB BSB: Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them the way of truth will be defamed.
ULT And in greed, they will exploit you with false words, for whom condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction does not sleep. BSB BSB: In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with deceptive words. The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep.
ULT For if God did not spare angels who had sinned, but, in chains of darkness throwing down to Tartarus, he handed over those being kept for judgment; BSB BSB: For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
ULT and he did not spare the ancient world, but protected the eighth, Noah, a preacher of righteousness, having brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly ones; BSB BSB: if He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, among the eight;
ULT and he rescued righteous Lot, being oppressed by the behavior of the lawless ones in licentiousness, BSB BSB: and if He rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless
ULT (for, by seeing and by hearing, that righteous{ man}, living among them day from day, was tormenting his righteous soul by lawless works); BSB BSB: (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—
ULT the Lord knows how to rescue godly ones from a trial, and to keep the unrighteous ones to be punished in the day of judgment, BSB BSB: if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.
ULT but especially the ones going after the flesh in{ its} lusts of defilement, and despising authority. Audacious ones! Self- willed ones! They do not tremble while insulting glorious ones; BSB BSB: Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge the corrupt desires of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and self-willed, they are unafraid to slander glorious beings.
ULT whereas angels, being greater in strength and power, do not bring an insulting judgment against them in the presence of the Lord. BSB BSB: Yet not even angels, though greater in strength and power, dare to bring such slanderous charges against them before the Lord.
ULT But these{ men}, as unreasoning animals, having by nature been born for capture and destruction, slandering about{ those things} in which they are ignorant, they will also be destroyed in their destruction, BSB BSB: These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be captured and destroyed. They blaspheme in matters they do not understand, and like such creatures, they too will be destroyed.
ULT being harmed{ as} wages of unrighteousness, considering{ as} pleasure the reveling in the day, stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions while feasting with you; BSB BSB: The harm they will suffer is the wages of their wickedness. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deception as they feast with you.
ULT having eyes full of an adulteress, and never ceasing from sin, enticing unstable souls, having hearts trained in covetousness, children of cursing. BSB BSB: Their eyes are full of adultery; their desire for sin is never satisfied; they seduce the unstable. They are accursed children with hearts trained in greed.
ULT Abandoning the straight way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. BSB BSB: They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness.
ULT But he had a rebuke for his own transgression— a mute donkey, having spoken in a voice of a man, restrained the irrationality of the prophet. BSB BSB: But he was rebuked for his transgression by a donkey, otherwise without speech, that spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
ULT These{ men} are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved. BSB BSB: These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.
ULT For, speaking arrogant things of vanity, they entice by lusts of the flesh, by licentious acts, the ones barely escaping from the ones living in error, BSB BSB: With lofty but empty words, they appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh and entice those who are just escaping from others who live in error.
ULT promising freedom to them, while themselves being slaves of destruction.(For by what someone has been overcome, by this he has been enslaved.) BSB BSB: They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.
ULT For it was better for them not to know the way of righteousness than, having known{ it}, to turn away from the holy commandment that has been delivered to them. BSB BSB: It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than to have known it and then to turn away from the holy commandment passed on to them.
ULT This of the true proverb has happened to them:“A dog returns to its own vomit, and a washed pig to the rolling of mud.” BSB BSB: Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.”
