The Seventh Year (Exodus 23:10–13; Leviticus 25:1–7)
ULT At the end of seven years, you shall make a remission. BSB BSB: At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.
ULT And this{ is} the word of the remission: Every owner of debt shall release his hand that he has loaned to his neighbor; he shall not oppress his neighbor and his brother, because the remission of Yahweh has been proclaimed. BSB BSB: This is the manner of remission: Every creditor shall cancel what he has loaned to his neighbor. He is not to collect anything from his neighbor or brother, because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed.
ULT You may collect{ from} a foreigner, and what is yours{ with} your brother your hand shall release. BSB BSB: You may collect something from a foreigner, but you must forgive whatever your brother owes you.
ULT However, there should be no poor among you(for blessing, Yahweh will bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you{ as} an inheritance, to possess it), BSB BSB: There will be no poor among you, however, because the LORD will surely bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance,
ULT if only listening, you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep doing all these commandments that I am commanding you today. BSB BSB: if only you obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all these commandments I am giving you today.
ULT For Yahweh your God will bless you, as he spoke to you; you will lend to many nations, and you, you will not borrow, and you will rule over many nations, and they will not rule over you. BSB BSB: When the LORD your God blesses you as He has promised, you will lend to many nations but borrow from none; you will rule over many nations but be ruled by none.
Generosity in Lending and Giving (Matthew 6:1–4)
ULT If there is poor among you, from one of your brothers, within one of your gates in your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, do not harden your heart, and do not shut your hand from your poor brother, BSB BSB: If there is a poor man among your brothers within any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, then you are not to harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother.
ULT but opening, you shall open your hand to him and lending, you shall lend him enough{ for} his need that he has need. BSB BSB: Instead, you are to open your hand to him and freely loan him whatever he needs.
ULT Watch yourselves, lest there be a wicked matter in your heart, saying,‘The seventh year, the year of remission,{ is} near,’ and you do wrong in your eyes against your poor brother and do not give to him, and he calls out to Yahweh about you, and it would be sin for you. BSB BSB: Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought in your heart: “The seventh year, the year of release, is near,” so that you look upon your poor brother begrudgingly and give him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
ULT Giving, you shall give to him, and your heart shall not do evil in your giving to him, because of this matter Yahweh your God will bless you in all your work and in all the sending out of your hand. BSB BSB: Give generously to him, and do not let your heart be grieved when you do so. And because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything to which you put your hand.
ULT For the poor will not cease to be among the land; therefore I command you, saying,‘Opening, you shall open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor in your land.’ BSB BSB: For there will never cease to be poor in the land; that is why I am commanding you to open wide your hand to your brother and to the poor and needy in your land.
Hebrew Servants (Exodus 21:1–11)
ULT And when you send him out free from you, you must not send him emptily. BSB BSB: And when you release him, do not send him away empty-handed.
ULT Providing, you shall liberally provide for him from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your winepress. As Yahweh your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. BSB BSB: You are to furnish him liberally from your flock, your threshing floor, and your winepress. You shall give to him as the LORD your God has blessed you.
ULT And you must remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you; therefore I am commanding you today this matter. BSB BSB: Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; that is why I am giving you this command today.
ULT And it will be, if he says to you,‘I will not go from you,’ because he loves you and your house, because{ it is} good for him{ to be} with you, BSB BSB: But if your servant says to you, ‘I do not want to leave you,’ because he loves you and your household and is well off with you,
ULT then you shall take an awl and put{ it} through his ear and to the door, and he shall be your slave forever. And also you shall do thus to your female slave. BSB BSB: then take an awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he will become your servant for life. And treat your maidservant the same way.
ULT It must not seem difficult in your eyes when you send him out free from you, for double the wage of a hired man he has served you six years. And Yahweh your God will bless you in all that you do. BSB BSB: Do not regard it as a hardship to set your servant free, because his six years of service were worth twice the wages of a hired hand. And the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.
Firstborn Animals (Exodus 13:1–16)
ULT All the firstborn that are born in your herd and your flock, you shall sanctify the males to Yahweh your God. You shall not work with the firstborn of your herd, and you shall not shear the firstborn of your flock. BSB BSB: You must set apart to the LORD your God every firstborn male produced by your herds and flocks. You are not to put the firstborn of your oxen to work, nor are you to shear the firstborn of your flock.
ULT You must eat it year by year to the face of Yahweh your God in the place that Yahweh will choose, you and your house. BSB BSB: Each year you and your household are to eat it before the LORD your God in the place the LORD will choose.
ULT And if it has on it a blemish(lame or blind, any severe blemish), you must not sacrifice it to Yahweh your God. BSB BSB: But if an animal has a defect, is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the LORD your God.
ULT You shall eat it within your gates, the unclean and the clean alike, as a gazelle or a deer. BSB BSB: Eat it within your gates; both the ceremonially unclean and clean may eat it as they would a gazelle or a deer.
ULT Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it on the ground like water. BSB BSB: But you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
