Israel’s Punishment 1 ULT Do not rejoice, Israel, to joy like the peoples, for you have prostituted{ yourself} from upon your God. You have loved prostitute- wages on all the threshing floors of grain. BSB BSB: Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations, for you have played the harlot against your God; you have made love for hire on every threshing floor.
2 ULT The threshing floor and the winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail her. BSB BSB: The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them.
3 ULT They will not dwell in the land of Yahweh, and Ephraim will return{ to} Egypt, and in Assyria they will eat unclean{ food}. BSB BSB: They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.
4 ULT They will not pour out wine to Yahweh, and their sacrifices will not be pleasing to him; like bread of mourning{ they will be} to them; all the eaters of it will be defiled. For their bread{ will} be for their appetite; it will not enter the house of Yahweh. BSB BSB: They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD.
5 ULT What will you do for the day of meeting, and for the day of the festival of Yahweh? BSB BSB: What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast?
6 ULT For behold, they go away from destruction, Egypt will gather them; Memphis will bury them. Nettles will possess the precious things of their silver; thorns{ will be} in their tents. BSB BSB: For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and Memphis will bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, and thorns will overrun their tents.
7 ULT The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have come. Israel will know{ it}! The prophet{ is} a fool; the man of the Spirit is insane, because of the abundance of your iniquity and great hostility. 8 ULT The watcher of Ephraim{ is} with my God;{ as for} the prophet, a snare of a fowler{ is} on all his ways; hostility{ is} in the house of his God. BSB BSB: The prophet is Ephraim’s watchman, along with my God, yet the snare of the fowler lies on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God!
9 ULT They have made deep, they have corrupted{ themselves} as{ in} the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; he will punish their sins. BSB BSB: They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins.
11 ULT Ephraim— like a bird their glory will fly away— from birth, and from womb, and from conception. BSB BSB: Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.
12 ULT Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them from a man. For indeed, woe to them when I turn away from them! BSB BSB: Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe be to them when I turn away from them!
13 ULT Ephraim— just as I have seen for Tyre, planted in a meadow, so Ephraim{ is} to bring out his children to the slayer. BSB BSB: I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a meadow. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.
14 ULT Give to them, Yahweh— what will you give? Give to them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. BSB BSB: Give them, O LORD—what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up!
15 ULT All their evil{ is} in Gilgal, for there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will not continue loving them; all their princes{ are} rebels. BSB BSB: All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.
16 ULT Ephraim is struck; their root has dried up; they will not produce fruit. Even if they do give birth, then I will kill the precious ones of their womb. BSB BSB: Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay the darlings of their wombs.
17 ULT My God will reject them, for they have not listened to him, so they will be wanderers among the nations. BSB BSB: My God will reject them because they have not obeyed Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
