Lands Yet Unconquered (Judges 1:1–7)
1 ULT Now Joshua had aged, he had come into days. And Yahweh said to him,“You have aged, you have come into days, and very much land remains to possess it. BSB BSB: Now Joshua was old and well along in years, and the LORD said to him, “You are old and well along in years, but very much of the land remains to be possessed.
2 ULT This{ is} the remaining land: all of the territories of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurite, BSB BSB: This is the land that remains: All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites,
3 ULT from Shihor, which{ is} at the face of Egypt, and unto the border of Ekron northward(it shall be reckoned to the Canaanite); the five lords of the Philistines: the Gazite and the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gathite, and the Ekronite; and the Avvites BSB BSB: from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—that of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites; 4 ULT from the south; all of the land of the Canaanite, and Mearah, which{ is} to the Sidonians, unto Aphek, unto the border of the Amorite; BSB BSB: to the south, all the land of the Canaanites, from Mearah of the Sidonians to Aphek, as far as the border of the Amorites;
5 ULT and the land of the Gebalite; and all of Lebanon from the rising of the sun, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon unto Lebo Hamath. BSB BSB: the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath.
6 ULT All of the dwellers of the hill country, from Lebanon unto Misrephoth Maim, all of the Sidonians, I myself will dispossess them from the face of the sons of Israel. You shall only cause it to fall to Israel as an inheritance, just as I have commanded you. BSB BSB: All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
7 ULT And now divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.” BSB BSB: Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
The Inheritance East of the Jordan (Numbers 32:1–42; Deuteronomy 3:12–22)
8 ULT With him the Reubenite and the Gadite had taken their inheritance that Moses had given to them on the other side of the Jordan, toward the sunrise, just as Moses, the servant of Yahweh, had given to them: BSB BSB: The other half of Manasseh, along with the Reubenites and Gadites, had received the inheritance Moses had given them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned to them:
9 ULT from Aroer, which is on the lip of the wadi of Arnon, and the city that{ is} in the middle of the wadi, and all of the plateau of Medeba unto Dibon; BSB BSB: The area from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
10 ULT and all of the cities of Sihon, the king of the Amorite, who reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the sons of Ammon; BSB BSB: and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;
11 ULT and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite and the Maacathite, and all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan unto Salekah, BSB BSB: also Gilead and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salecah—
12 ULT all of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei.(He remained from the remnant of the Raphaites.) And Moses struck them and dispossessed them. BSB BSB: the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei and had remained as a remnant of the Rephaim. Moses had struck them down and dispossessed them,
13 ULT But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurite and the Maacathite. And Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day. BSB BSB: but the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. So Geshur and Maacath dwell among the Israelites to this day.
14 ULT Only he did not give an inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The burnt offerings of Yahweh, the God of Israel, they are his inheritance, just as he spoke to him. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The food offerings to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
Reuben’s Inheritance 15 ULT And Moses gave to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their clans. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Reuben:
16 ULT And the border for them was from Aroer, which{ is} on the lip of the wadi of Arnon, and the city that{ is} in the middle of the wadi, and all of the plateau beside Medeba, BSB BSB: The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the middle of the valley, to the whole plateau beyond Medeba,
17 ULT Heshbon and all of its cities that{ are} in the plateau, Dibon and Bamoth Baal and Beth Baal Meon BSB BSB: to Heshbon and all its cities on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
18 ULT and Jahaz and Kedemoth and Mephaath BSB BSB: Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
19 ULT and Kiriathai and Sibmah and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley BSB BSB: Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,
20 ULT and Beth Peor and the slopes of Pisgah and Beth Jeshimoth BSB BSB: Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth—
21 ULT and all of the cities of the plateau, and all of the kingdom of Sihon, the king of the Amorite, who had reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck, him and the leaders of Midian: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, the dwellers of the land. BSB BSB: all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
22 ULT And the sons of Israel slew with the sword Balaam, the son of Beor, the diviner, with the slain. BSB BSB: The Israelites also killed the diviner Balaam son of Beor along with the others they put to the sword.
23 ULT And the border of the sons of Reuben was the Jordan and its border. This{ is} the inheritance of the sons of Reuben according to their clans, the cities, and their villages. BSB BSB: And the border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the clans of the Reubenites, including the cities and villages.
Gad’s Inheritance 24 ULT And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad according to their clans. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe of Gad:
25 ULT And the border for them was Jazer and all of the cities of Gilead and half of the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Aroer, which{ is} at the face of Rabbah, BSB BSB: The territory of Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
26 ULT and from Heshbon unto Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir, BSB BSB: the territory from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
27 ULT and in the valley, Beth Haram and Beth Nimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon, the king of Heshbon, the Jordan and the border, unto the end of the Sea of Chinnereth, beyond the Jordan from the sunrise. BSB BSB: and in the valley, Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, with the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon (the territory on the east side of the Jordan up to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth).
28 ULT This is the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their clans, the cities and their villages. BSB BSB: This was the inheritance of the clans of the Gadites, including the cities and villages.
Manasseh’s Eastern Inheritance 29 ULT And Moses gave to half of the tribe of Manasseh, and it was to half of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their clans. BSB BSB: This is what Moses had given to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh:
30 ULT And their border was from Mahanaim, all of Bashan, all of the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, and all of the towns of Jair, which{ are} in Bashan, 60 cities. BSB BSB: The territory from Mahanaim through all Bashan—all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, including all the towns of Jair that are in Bashan, sixty cities;
31 ULT And half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei(the cities of the kingdom of Og in the Bashan), were to the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the sons of Machir according to their clans. BSB BSB: half of Gilead; and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan. All this was for the clans of the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, that is, half of the descendants of Machir.
32 ULT These{ are} what Moses caused to inherit in the plains of Moab, from the other side of the Jordan, Jericho from the sunrise. BSB BSB: These were the portions Moses had given them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho.
33 ULT But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. Yahweh, the God of Israel, he{ is} their inheritance, just as he spoke to them. BSB BSB: To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
