Land Division West of the Jordan 1 ULT Now these{ are} what the sons of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel caused them to inherit. BSB BSB: Now these are the portions that the Israelites inherited in the land of Canaan, as distributed by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of Israel.
2 ULT Their inheritance{ was} by lot, just as Yahweh had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half of a tribe. BSB BSB: Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine and a half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
3 ULT For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and half of a tribe from the other side of the Jordan. But to the Levites he did not give an inheritance in the midst of them. BSB BSB: For Moses had given the inheritance east of the Jordan to the other two and a half tribes. But he granted no inheritance among them to the Levites.
4 ULT For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no portion to the Levites in the land if not cities for dwelling and their pasturelands for their livestock and for their property. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph became two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion of the land was given to the Levites, except for cities in which to live, along with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
5 ULT Just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. And they divided the land. BSB BSB: So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.
Caleb Requests Hebron 6 ULT And the sons of Judah came near to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, said to him,“You yourself know the word that Yahweh spoke to Moses, the man of God, concerning me and concerning you at Kadesh Barnea. BSB BSB: Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
7 ULT I{ was} a son of 40 years when Moses, the servant of Yahweh, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy on the land. And I brought back word to him just as{ was} in my heart. BSB BSB: I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back to him an honest report.
8 ULT But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt. But I myself was full after Yahweh my God. BSB BSB: Although my brothers who went with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear, I remained loyal to the LORD my God.
9 ULT And Moses swore on that day, saying,‘If the land on which your foot has trodden will not be for an inheritance for you and for your sons unto forever, for you were full after Yahweh my God.’ BSB BSB: On that day Moses swore to me, saying, ‘Surely the land on which you have set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’
10 ULT And now, behold, Yahweh has kept me alive these 45 years, just as he spoke, from when Yahweh spoke this word to Moses when Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, today I am a son of 85 years. BSB BSB: Now behold, as the LORD promised, He has kept me alive these forty-five years since He spoke this word to Moses, while Israel wandered in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old,
11 ULT Still I{ am} strong today just as on the day Moses sent me. As{ was} my strength then, so{ is} my strength now, for war, and for going out and for coming in. BSB BSB: still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. As my strength was then, so it is now for war, for going out, and for coming in.
12 ULT And now, give to me this hill country that Yahweh spoke{ of} on that day. For you yourself heard on that day that the Anakites{ were} there and great fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh{ will be} with me and I will dispossess them, just as Yahweh has spoken.” BSB BSB: Now therefore give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you yourself heard then that the Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
13 ULT And Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, for an inheritance. BSB BSB: Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.
14 ULT Therefore Hebron is to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, for an inheritance to this day, because he was full after Yahweh, the God of Israel. BSB BSB: Therefore Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.
15 ULT (Now the name of Hebron formerly{ was} Kiriath Arba. He{ was} a great man among the Anakites.) And the land rested from war. BSB BSB: (Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.) Then the land had rest from war.
