Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy 1 ULT And it happened that, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, they were also watching him closely. BSB BSB: One Sabbath, Jesus went to eat in the home of a leading Pharisee, and those in attendance were watching Him closely.
ULT And behold, a certain man who was edematous{ was} before him. BSB BSB: Right there before Him was a man with dropsy.
ULT And answering, Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying,“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” BSB BSB: So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”
ULT But they kept silent. And, taking hold of him, he healed him and sent him away. BSB BSB: But they remained silent. Then Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.
ULT And he said to them,“Of which of you will a son or an ox fall into a well, and he will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” BSB BSB: And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”
ULT And they were not able to give an answer to these things. BSB BSB: And they were unable to answer these questions.
The Parable of the Guests 7 ULT Then he was speaking a parable to the ones that had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the first places,{ and} saying to them, BSB BSB: When Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, He told them a parable:
ULT “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not recline to eat in the first place, lest a more honorable than you may have been invited by him, BSB BSB: “When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited.
ULT and{ when} the one having invited you and him arrives, he will say to you,‘Give your place to this one,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the last place. BSB BSB: Then the host who invited both of you will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ And in humiliation, you will have to take the last place.
ULT But when you are invited, go{ and} recline to eat in the last place, so that when the one that had invited you comes, he will say to you,‘Friend, come up higher.’ Then there will be glory to you before all the ones reclining to eat with you. BSB BSB: But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place, so that your host will come and tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in front of everyone at the table with you.
ULT For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.” BSB BSB: For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
ULT Then he also said to the one that had invited him,“When you make a lunch or a supper, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and repayment happen to you. BSB BSB: Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
ULT But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame,{ and the} blind, BSB BSB: But when you host a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind,
ULT and you will be blessed, because they do not have to repay you. For it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the righteous.” BSB BSB: and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
The Parable of the Banquet (Matthew 22:1–14)
ULT And one of the ones reclining to eat, having heard these things, said to him,“Blessed{ is} whoever will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” BSB BSB: When one of those reclining with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is everyone who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”
ULT But he said to him,“A certain man made a large supper and invited many. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many guests.
ULT And he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to the ones that had been invited,‘Come, because it is now ready.’ BSB BSB: When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
ULT And they all from one began to excuse themselves. The first said to him,‘I have bought a field, and I have need to go out to see it. I ask you, have me excused.’ BSB BSB: But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first one said, ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go see it. Please excuse me.’
ULT And another said,‘I have bought five pairs of oxen, and I am going to try them out. I ask you, have me excused.’ BSB BSB: Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please excuse me.’
ULT And another said,‘I have married a wife, and because of this I am not able to come.’ BSB BSB: Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come.’
ULT And the servant came{ and} reported these things to his master. Then becoming angry, the master of the house said to his servant,‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ BSB BSB: The servant returned and reported all this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’
ULT And the servant said,‘Master, what you commanded has happened, and there is still room.’ BSB BSB: ‘Sir,’ the servant replied, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’
ULT And the master said to the servant,‘Go out into the roads and hedges and compel{ them} to come in, so that my house may be filled. BSB BSB: So the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
ULT For I say to you that none of those men that had been invited will taste of my supper.’” BSB BSB: For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will taste my banquet.’”
The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66)
ULT Whoever does not carry his cross and come after me is not able to be my disciple. BSB BSB: And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
ULT For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down{ and} calculate the cost— whether he has for completion? BSB BSB: Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?
ULT Otherwise, he having laid a foundation and not being able to finish, all who see it will begin to mock him, BSB BSB: Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
ULT saying,‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ BSB BSB: saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’
ULT Or what king, going to fight with another king in war, will not sit down{ and} first determine whether he is able with 10, 000 to meet the one coming against him with 20, 000? BSB BSB: Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
ULT But if not, while he is still far away, sending a delegation, he asks the things for peace. BSB BSB: And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.
ULT In the same way, then, every one of you who does not renounce all the{ things that} he himself possesses is not able to be my disciple. BSB BSB: In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.
Good Salt (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:49–50)
ULT Salt then{ is} good, but if the salt indeed is made tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? BSB BSB: Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?
ULT It is useful neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. They throw it outside. The one having ears to hear, let him hear.” BSB BSB: It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile, and it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
