John’s Inquiry (Luke 7:18–23)
ULT And it happened that when Jesus had finished giving orders to his 12 disciples, he departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. BSB BSB: After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
ULT said to him,“Are you the one coming, or should we expect another?” BSB BSB: to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”

ULT The blind see again, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor are being told the gospel. BSB BSB: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
ULT And blessed is whoever is not caused to stumble on me.” BSB BSB: Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Luke 7:24–35)
ULT Now,{ as} these were going on their way, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John,“What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? BSB BSB: As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
ULT But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, the ones wearing soft clothing are in the houses of the kings. BSB BSB: Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces.
ULT But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. BSB BSB: What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
ULT This is he concerning whom it is written,‘Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ BSB BSB: This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
ULT Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist, but the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
ULT But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. BSB BSB: From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.
ULT For all the Prophets and the Law have prophesied until John; BSB BSB: For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
ULT The one having ears to hear, let him hear. BSB BSB: He who has ears, let him hear.
ULT Now to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplace, who are calling out to the others, BSB BSB: To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
ULT saying,‘We played a flute for you, and you did not dance. We sang a funeral song, and you did not mourn.’ BSB BSB: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
ULT For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say,‘He has a demon.’ BSB BSB: For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
ULT The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,‘Behold a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom has been justified by her children.” BSB BSB: The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”
Woe to the Unrepentant (Luke 10:13–16)
ULT Then he began to rebuke the cities in which most of his miracles were done, because they had not repented. BSB BSB: Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
ULT Nevertheless, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. BSB BSB: But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
ULT And you, Capernaum, you will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down as far as Hades. For if the miracles that happened in you had happened in Sodom, it would have remained until today. BSB BSB: And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
ULT Nevertheless, I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” BSB BSB: But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Rest for the Weary (Luke 10:21–24)
ULT At that time, answering, Jesus said,“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you concealed these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to little children. BSB BSB: At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
ULT Yes, Father, for thus it was well- pleasing before you. BSB BSB: Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
ULT All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and to whomever the Son desires to reveal him. BSB BSB: All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
ULT Come to me, all the ones laboring and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest. BSB BSB: Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
ULT Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. BSB BSB: Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
ULT For my yoke{ is} easy and my burden is light.” BSB BSB: For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
