The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9–13; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:28–40; John 12:12–19)
ULT And when they came near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, BSB BSB: As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples,
ULT saying to them,“Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied up, and a colt with her. Having untied{ them}, bring{ them} to me. BSB BSB: saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to Me.
ULT And if anyone says anything to you, you will say,‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” BSB BSB: If anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
ULT Now this happened so that{ what} was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, BSB BSB: This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
ULT “Tell the daughter of Zion,‘Behold, your King is coming to you, humble and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, a son of a beast of burden.’” BSB BSB: “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
ULT Now the disciples, having gone and having done just as Jesus had directed them, BSB BSB: So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
ULT brought the donkey and the colt and put their cloaks on them, and he sat upon them. BSB BSB: They brought the donkey and the colt and laid their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.
ULT Now the largest crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and were spreading{ them} on the road. BSB BSB: A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
ULT Now the crowds going before him and following were crying out, saying,“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” BSB BSB: The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
ULT And{ when} he had entered into Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying,“Who is this?” BSB BSB: When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
ULT And the crowds were saying,“This is Jesus the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” BSB BSB: The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Jesus Cleanses the Temple (Mark 11:15–19; Luke 19:45–48; John 2:12–25)
ULT And Jesus entered into the temple and cast out all the ones selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of the ones selling the doves. BSB BSB: Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.
ULT And he says to them,“It has been written,‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a‘den of robbers.’” BSB BSB: And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
ULT And the blind and the lame approached him in the temple, and he healed them. BSB BSB: The blind and the lame came to Him at the temple, and He healed them.
ULT But the chief priests and the scribes, having seen the marvelous things that he did and the children crying out in the temple and saying,“Hosanna to the Son of David,” became very angry. BSB BSB: But the chief priests and scribes were indignant when they saw the wonders He performed and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
ULT And they said to him,“Do you hear what these are saying?” But Jesus says to them,“Yes! Have you never read,‘From the mouths of little children and nursing infants you have prepared praise’?” BSB BSB: “Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked. “Yes,” Jesus answered. “Have you never read: ‘From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise’?”
ULT And having left them, he went out from the city to Bethany and spent the night there. BSB BSB: Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where He spent the night.
The Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11:12–14; Mark 11:20–25)
ULT And having seen one fig tree along the road, he went to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And he says to it,“May there no longer be fruit from you to eternity,” and immediately the fig tree withered. BSB BSB: Seeing a fig tree by the road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. “May you never bear fruit again!” He said. And immediately the tree withered.
ULT And having seen this, the disciples marveled, saying,“How did the fig tree immediately wither?” BSB BSB: When the disciples saw this, they marveled and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”
ULT But, answering, Jesus said to them,“Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do{ what was} of the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain,‘Be taken up and be thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. BSB BSB: “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.
ULT And everything, as much as you request in prayer, believing, you will receive.” BSB BSB: If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Jesus’ Authority Challenged (Mark 11:27–33; Luke 20:1–8)
ULT And{ when} he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him teaching, saying,“By what authority do you do these things, and who gave you this authority?” BSB BSB: When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began to teach, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to Him. “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You this authority?”
ULT But answering, Jesus said to them,“I also will ask you one word, which if you tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. BSB BSB: “I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied, “and if you answer Me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
ULT The baptism of John— from where was it? From heaven or from men?” But they were reasoning among themselves, saying,“If we say,‘From heaven,’ he will say to us,‘For what{ reason} then did you not believe him?’ BSB BSB: What was the source of John’s baptism? Was it from heaven or from men?” They deliberated among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
ULT But if we say,‘From men,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.” BSB BSB: But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the people, for they all regard John as a prophet.”
ULT And answering Jesus, they said,“We do not know.” He also said to them,“Nor do I tell you by what authority I do these things. BSB BSB: So they answered, “We do not know.” And Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
The Parable of the Two Sons 28 ULT But what do you think? A man had two children, and having approached the first, he said,‘Child, go, work today in the vineyard.’ BSB BSB: But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first one and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
ULT But he, answering, said,‘I will not,’ but afterward, having changed his mind, he went. BSB BSB: ‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went.
ULT But, having approached the other, he said likewise. And he, answering, said,‘I will, lord,’ but he did not go. BSB BSB: Then the man went to the second son and told him the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he said. But he did not go.
ULT Which of the two did the will of his father?” They say,“The first.” Jesus says to them,“Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes enter into the kingdom of God before you. BSB BSB: Which of the two did the will of his father?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.
ULT For John came to you in the way of righteousness, but you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. But you, having seen this, did not change your minds afterward to believe in him. BSB BSB: For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.
The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Mark 12:1–12; Luke 20:9–18)
ULT Listen to another parable. There was a man, a master of a house, who planted a vineyard and put a hedge around it and dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower and rented it out to farmers and went abroad. BSB BSB: Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.
ULT Now, when the time of the fruits came near, he sent his servants to the farmers to receive his fruits. BSB BSB: When the harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit.
ULT But the farmers, having seized his servants, beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. BSB BSB: But the tenants seized his servants. They beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.
ULT Again, he sent other servants, more than the first, but they did to them likewise. BSB BSB: Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group. But the tenants did the same to them.
ULT But afterward, he sent to them his son, saying,‘They will respect my son.’ BSB BSB: Finally, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
ULT But the farmers, having seen the son, said among themselves,‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ BSB BSB: But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance.’
ULT And having seized him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed{ him}. BSB BSB: So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
ULT Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?” BSB BSB: Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do to those tenants?”
ULT They say to him,“He will severely destroy those evil ones, and he will rent out the vineyard to other farmers who will repay him the fruits in their times.” BSB BSB: “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and will rent out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his share of the fruit at harvest time.”
ULT Jesus says to them,“Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘A stone that the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner. This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
ULT For this reason I say to you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to a nation producing its fruits. BSB BSB: Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
ULT And the one having fallen on this stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.” BSB BSB: He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.”
ULT And the chief priests and the Pharisees, having heard his parables, knew that he is speaking about them. BSB BSB: When the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they knew that Jesus was speaking about them.
ULT And seeking to seize him, they feared the crowds, because they were regarding him as a prophet. BSB BSB: Although they wanted to arrest Him, they were afraid of the crowds, because the people regarded Him as a prophet.
