The Parable of the Banquet (Luke 14:15–24)
ULT And answering, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying, BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to them in parables:
ULT “The kingdom of the heavens is compared to a man, a king, who made a wedding feast for his son. BSB BSB: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
ULT And he sent out his servants to call the ones having been invited to the wedding feast, and they were not willing to come. BSB BSB: He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come.
ULT Again he sent other servants, saying,‘Say to the ones having been invited,“Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My bulls and fattened calves have been killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ BSB BSB: Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
ULT But they, having paid no attention, went away, one to his own field and one to his business. BSB BSB: But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.
ULT But the rest, having seized his servants, mistreated and killed{ them}. BSB BSB: The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
ULT But the king became angry, and having sent his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers and burned their city. BSB BSB: The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city.
ULT Then he says to his servants,‘The wedding feast is ready, but the ones having been invited were not worthy. BSB BSB: Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy.
ULT Therefore, go to the crossings of the roads and invite as many as you find to the wedding feast.’ BSB BSB: Go therefore to the crossroads and invite to the banquet as many as you can find.’
ULT And those servants, having gone out to the roads, gathered together all whom they found, both evil and good, and the wedding was filled{ with those} reclining to eat. BSB BSB: So the servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
ULT But the king, having come in to look at the ones reclining to eat, saw there a man not wearing wedding clothes. BSB BSB: But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes.
ULT And he says to him,‘Friend, how did you come in here, not having wedding clothes?’ But he was silent. BSB BSB: ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.
ULT Then the king said to the servants,‘Having bound his feet and hands, throw him out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and grinding of the teeth.’ BSB BSB: Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
ULT For many are called, but few chosen.” BSB BSB: For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Paying Taxes to Caesar (Mark 12:13–17; Luke 20:19–26)
ULT Then, having gone, the Pharisees took counsel how they might entrap him in word. BSB BSB: Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words.
ULT And they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying,“Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and you teach the way of God in truth, and it is not a concern to you about anyone, for you do not look at the face of men. BSB BSB: They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance.
ULT Therefore, tell us, what do you think? Is it lawful to give a poll tax to Caesar, or not?” BSB BSB: So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
ULT But Jesus, having known their wickedness, said,“Why are you testing me, hypocrites? BSB BSB: But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
ULT Show me the coin of the poll tax.” And they brought a denarius to him. BSB BSB: Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.
ULT And he says to them,“Whose image and inscription{ is} this?” BSB BSB: “Whose image is this,” He asked, “and whose inscription?”
ULT They say,“Caesar’ s.” Then he says to them,“Therefore, give back the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.” BSB BSB: “Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
ULT And having heard{ it}, they marveled, and having left him, they went away. BSB BSB: And when they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Mark 12:18–27; Luke 20:27–40)
ULT saying,“Teacher, Moses said,‘If someone dies, not having children, his brother will marry his wife and will raise up seed for his brother.’ BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
ULT But there were among us seven brothers, and the first, having married, died. And not having seed, he left his wife to his brother. BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
ULT Likewise also, the second and the third, until the seven. BSB BSB: The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.
ULT And last of all, the woman died. BSB BSB: And last of all, the woman died.
ULT Therefore, in the resurrection, of which of the seven will she be a wife? For they all had her.” BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”
ULT But answering, Jesus said to them,“You are being led astray, not knowing the Scriptures or the power of God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
ULT For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like angels in heaven. BSB BSB: In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
ULT But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read{ what} was spoken to you by God, saying, BSB BSB: But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
ULT And having heard this, the crowds were astonished at his teaching. BSB BSB: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Mark 12:28–34)
ULT But the Pharisees, having heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered together at the same place. BSB BSB: And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
ULT And one of them, a lawyer, questioned{ him}, testing him— BSB BSB: One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
ULT “Teacher, which{ is} the great commandment in the law?” BSB BSB: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
ULT But he said to him,“You will love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole mind. BSB BSB: Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
ULT This is the great and first commandment. BSB BSB: This is the first and greatest commandment.
ULT Now a second{ is} like it—‘You will love your neighbor as yourself.’ BSB BSB: And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
ULT On these two commandments are hung the whole Law and the Prophets.” BSB BSB: All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Mark 12:35–37; Luke 20:41–44)
ULT Now the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus questioned them, BSB BSB: While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
ULT saying,“What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They say to him,“David’ s.” BSB BSB: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” “David’s,” they answered.
ULT He says to them,“How then does David in the Spirit call him‘Lord,’ saying, BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says:
ULT ‘The Lord said to my Lord,“Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? BSB BSB: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
ULT If David therefore calls him‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” BSB BSB: So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”
ULT And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day to question him any longer. BSB BSB: No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on no one dared to question Him any further.
