Woes to Scribes and Pharisees (Luke 11:37–54)
ULT Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, BSB BSB: Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples:
ULT saying,“The scribes and the Pharisees sat in the seat of Moses. BSB BSB: “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
ULT Therefore, everything, as much as they say to you, do and keep. But do not do according to their works, for they say and do not do. BSB BSB: So practice and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
ULT And they tie up loads, heavy and difficult to carry, and they put{ them} on the shoulders of men, but they themselves are not willing with their finger to move them. BSB BSB: They tie up heavy, burdensome loads and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
ULT But they do all their deeds to be seen by men. For they broaden their phylacteries and they lengthen their tassels. BSB BSB: All their deeds are done for men to see. They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
ULT And they love the first places at the banquets and the first seats in the synagogues, BSB BSB: They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues,
ULT and the greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called‘Rabbi’ by men. BSB BSB: the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of ‘Rabbi’ by which they are addressed.
ULT But you should not be called‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, and you are all brothers. BSB BSB: But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.
ULT And you should not call{ anyone} on the earth your father, for one is your heavenly Father. BSB BSB: And do not call anyone on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
ULT And you should not be called‘teacher,’ for your teacher is one, the Christ. BSB BSB: Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Christ.
ULT But the greatest among you will be your servant. BSB BSB: The greatest among you shall be your servant.
ULT But whoever will exalt himself will be humbled, and whoever will humble himself will be exalted. BSB BSB: For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
ULT But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of the heavens in front of men. For you do not enter in, nor do you permit the ones entering to enter. BSB BSB: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.
ULT But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour the houses of widows, also for a pretext praying at length. For this reason, you will receive greater judgment. BSB BSB: Not in the BSB
ULT Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you go around the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes{ one}, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as you. BSB BSB: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
ULT Woe to you, blind guides, the ones saying,‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing. But whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ BSB BSB: Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’
ULT Foolish and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple having sanctified the gold? BSB BSB: You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes it sacred?
ULT And,‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing. But whoever swears by the gift on top of it, he is obligated.’ BSB BSB: And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’
ULT Foolish and blind! For which{ is} greater, the gift or the altar sanctifying the gift? BSB BSB: You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes it sacred?
ULT Therefore, the one having sworn by the altar swears by it and by everything{ that is} on top of it. BSB BSB: So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
ULT And the one having sworn by the temple swears by it and by the one inhabiting it. BSB BSB: And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it.
ULT And the one having sworn by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one sitting on it. BSB BSB: And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the One who sits on it.
ULT Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe the mint and the dill and the cumin, but you have neglected the weightier{ things} of the law— justice and mercy and faith. But it was necessary to do these and those not to neglect. BSB BSB: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, dill, and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 ULT Blind guides, the ones straining out the gnat but swallowing the camel! BSB BSB: You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
ULT Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and lack of self- control. BSB BSB: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
ULT Blind Pharisee! Clean first the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside of them might become clean also. BSB BSB: Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.
ULT In the same way, you also on the outside appear righteous to men, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. BSB BSB: In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
ULT Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous. BSB BSB: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.
ULT And you say,‘If we were in the days of our fathers, we would not have been sharers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ BSB BSB: And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
ULT Therefore you testify against yourselves that you are sons of the ones having killed the prophets. BSB BSB: So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.
ULT And you, fill up the measure of your fathers! BSB BSB: Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your fathers.
ULT Serpents, offspring of vipers, how might you escape from the judgment of Gehenna? BSB BSB: You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the sentence of hell?
ULT For this reason, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise{ ones} and scribes. From them you will kill and crucify, and from them you will whip in your synagogues and pursue from city to city, BSB BSB: Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.
ULT so that might come upon you all the righteous blood being shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. BSB BSB: And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
ULT Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Lament over Jerusalem (Luke 13:31–35)
ULT Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning the ones having been sent to her! How often I desired to gather your children the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing! BSB BSB: O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
ULT Behold, your house is left to you desolate. BSB BSB: Look, your house is left to you desolate.
ULT For I say to you, you will certainly not see me from now until you say,‘Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord!’” BSB BSB: For I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
