Greetings from Paul and Timothy (Philippians 1:1–2; Colossians 1:1–2)
ULT Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and our brother Timothy to Philemon, the beloved and our fellow worker, BSB BSB: Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker,
ULT and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house. BSB BSB: to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets at your house:
ULT Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Faith and Love 4 ULT I always thank my God, making mention of you in my prayers, BSB BSB: I always thank my God, remembering you in my prayers,
ULT hearing of your love and the faith that you have in the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, BSB BSB: because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.
ULT that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of everything good{ that is} among us for Christ. BSB BSB: I pray that your partnership in the faith may become effective as you fully acknowledge every good thing that is ours in Christ.
ULT For I had much joy and comfort because of your love, because the inner parts of the saints are being refreshed by you, brother. BSB BSB: I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus 8 ULT Therefore, having much boldness in Christ to command you the{ thing that} is proper{ to do}, BSB BSB: So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you to do what is proper,
ULT because of love I appeal to you instead— being such a one as Paul, an elder, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus. BSB BSB: I prefer to appeal on the basis of love. For I, Paul, am now aged, and a prisoner of Christ Jesus as well.
ULT I am appealing to you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whom I have fathered in my chains. BSB BSB: I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains.
ULT The one formerly useless to you, but now useful both to you and to me, BSB BSB: Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
ULT whom I have sent back to you— him— this one is my inner parts; BSB BSB: I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.
ULT whom I desired to keep with me, so that he might serve me on behalf of you in the chains of the gospel. BSB BSB: I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
ULT But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your good{ deed} might not be as according to compulsion but according to good will. BSB BSB: But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of compulsion, but by your own free will.
ULT Therefore, if you have me{ as} a partner, receive him as me. BSB BSB: So if you consider me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
ULT But if he has wronged you or owes{ you} anything, charge that to me. BSB BSB: But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
ULT I, Paul, wrote this with my own hand. I myself will pay it back— in order not to say to you that you also owe me even your own self! BSB BSB: I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
ULT Yes, brother, may I benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my inner parts in Christ. BSB BSB: Yes, brother, let me have some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.
ULT Having become confident in your obedience, I wrote to you, having known that you will do even beyond what I am saying. BSB BSB: Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
ULT But at the same time, also prepare a guest room for me, for I hope that through your prayers I will be given back to you. BSB BSB: In the meantime, prepare a guest room for me, because I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
