The LORD Is My Rock (2 Samuel 22:1–51)
1 ULT And he said,“I love you, Yahweh, my strength. BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD, who sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: I love You, O LORD, my strength.
2 ULT Yahweh is my rock and my stronghold and my deliverer; my God, my rock; I take refuge in him, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high tower. BSB BSB: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 ULT { To} the one being praised I call,{ to} Yahweh, and I am saved from my enemies. BSB BSB: I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
4 ULT The cords of death encompassed me, and the torrents of wickedness terrified me. BSB BSB: The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me.
5 ULT The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. BSB BSB: The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
6 ULT In my distress, I called{ to} Yahweh, and to my God I cried out for help. He heard my voice from his temple, and my cry to his face went in his ears. BSB BSB: In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for His help reached His ears.
7 ULT Then the earth shook and trembled, and the foundations of the mountains quaked and shook themselves because it burned to him. BSB BSB: Then the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger.
8 ULT Smoke went up from his nose, and fire from his mouth devoured. Coals from him burned. BSB BSB: Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth.
9 ULT And he lowered the heavens, and he came down, and a dark cloud was under his feet. BSB BSB: He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet.
10 ULT And he rode on a cherub, and he flew, and he flew swiftly on the wings of the wind. BSB BSB: He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind.
11 ULT He set darkness his covering, the booth around him{ was} a darkness of waters, clouds of the skies. BSB BSB: He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy around Him.
12 ULT From the brightness before him, hailstones and coals of fire broke through his thick clouds. BSB BSB: From the brightness of His presence His clouds advanced—hailstones and coals of fire.
13 ULT And Yahweh thundered in the heavens and the Most High uttered his voice, hailstones and coals of fire. BSB BSB: The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded—hailstones and coals of fire.
14 ULT And he sent out his arrows and he scattered them and lightnings in abundance and he panicked them. BSB BSB: He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them.
15 ULT And the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were uncovered, from your rebuke, Yahweh, from the blast of the breath of your nose. BSB BSB: The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed, at Your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.
16 ULT He stretched out from the height, he took hold of me. He drew me out of many waters. BSB BSB: He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
17 ULT He delivered me from my strong enemy, from the ones hating me, for they were stronger than me. BSB BSB: He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me.
18 ULT They confronted me on the day of my calamity, but Yahweh was my support! BSB BSB: They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support.
19 ULT And he brought me out to an open space; he delivered me because he delighted in me. BSB BSB: He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me.
20 ULT Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands he has given back to me. BSB BSB: The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
21 ULT For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and I have not been wicked from my God. BSB BSB: For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 ULT For all of his judgments{ are} before me, and his statutes, I have not turned away from them. BSB BSB: For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes.
23 ULT And I have been blameless with him, and I have kept myself from my iniquity. BSB BSB: And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity.
24 ULT And Yahweh has given back to me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes. BSB BSB: So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.
25 ULT With the faithful you show yourself faithful; with a blameless man, you show yourself blameless. BSB BSB: To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
26 ULT With the purified, you show yourself pure, but with the crooked, you show yourself cunning. BSB BSB: to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.
27 ULT For you save a lowly people, but the eyes{ of} the ones being high, you bring them down. BSB BSB: For You save an afflicted people, but You humble those with haughty eyes.
28 ULT For you light my lamp; Yahweh my God lightens my darkness. BSB BSB: For You, O LORD, light my lamp; my God lights up my darkness.
29 ULT For by you I run{ after} a troop, and by my God I leap{ over} a wall. BSB BSB: For in You I can charge an army, and with my God I can scale a wall.
30 ULT This God, his way{ is} perfect. The word of Yahweh is refined. He{ is} a shield to all of the ones taking refuge in him. BSB BSB: As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 ULT For who is God except Yahweh? And who is a rock except our God? BSB BSB: For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
32 ULT This God is the one girding me{ with} valor, and he makes my way perfect, BSB BSB: It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear.
33 ULT making my feet like a deer, and he makes me stand on my high places, BSB BSB: He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.
34 ULT training my hands for war, and my arms bend a bow of bronze. BSB BSB: He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 ULT And you give to me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supports me, and your humility makes me great. BSB BSB: You have given me Your shield of salvation; Your right hand upholds me, and Your gentleness exalts me.
36 ULT You enlarge my step under me, and my feet do not slip. BSB BSB: You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way.
37 ULT I pursue my enemies, and I destroy them, and I do not return until I have ended them. BSB BSB: I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back until they were consumed.
38 ULT I severely wounded them so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. BSB BSB: I crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet.
39 ULT And you gird me{ with} valor for war; you make the ones rising up under me bow down. BSB BSB: You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me.
40 ULT And my enemies, you give to me the back of{ their} neck; the ones hating me, I destroyed them. BSB BSB: You have made my enemies retreat before me; I destroyed those who hated me.
41 ULT They called out for help, but there was none saving; to Yahweh, but he did not answer them. BSB BSB: They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but He did not answer.
42 ULT And I beat them fine as dust upon the face of the wind; like the mud of the streets I cast them out. BSB BSB: I ground them as dust in the face of the wind; I trampled them like mud in the streets.
43 ULT You rescue me from the disputes of people. You made me as the head of nations. People I did not know serve me. BSB BSB: You have delivered me from the strife of the people; You have made me the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me.
44 ULT At the hearing of an ear, they hear me; sons of the foreigner cringe to me. BSB BSB: When they hear me, they obey me; foreigners cower before me.
45 ULT Sons of the foreigner fade away, and they come trembling from their fortresses. BSB BSB: Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds.
46 ULT Yahweh is alive! And blessed be my rock, and may the God of my salvation be exalted, BSB BSB: The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may the God of my salvation be exalted—
47 ULT the God giving vengeance to me, and he subdues peoples under me, BSB BSB: the God who avenges me and subdues nations beneath me,
48 ULT the one delivering me from my enemies. Also, from the ones arising{ against} me you lift me up, from a man of violence, you deliver me. BSB BSB: who delivers me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men.
49 ULT Therefore, I thank you among the nations, Yahweh; and I will sing praise to your name, BSB BSB: Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
50 ULT the one magnifying the salvation of his king and doing covenant faithfulness to his anointed, to David, and to his seed until forever.” BSB BSB: Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
